Suicide in Utah

Today I received a Google alert that the Utah Department of Health released a report on suicide in Utah.  Once again the numbers are horrific and I post this as a reminder to the body of Christ to please pray for the Mormon people, especially for anyone in Utah.

If the restored gospel is God’s plan of happiness then why are people killing themselves at such an alarming rate in the state where the LDS Church is headquartered?  More than half of Utah (62.4%) is LDS according to the latest research.

The UDOH said that 22 Utah teens from the age of 15-19 commit suicide each year and is the 2nd leading cause of death.  It ranked as the 4th leading cause of death for 2005-2009 for adults ages 20-64.  Keep in mind that suicide ranks as the 11th cause of death in the U.S.  The leading cause of death for the nation is heart disease.

Every other year I write a report on this issue and you can read my latest report here

In my report I noted that there were 1,336 suicides in Utah from 2008-2010.  This is an average of one suicide every 17.22 hours in 2010 and 29 kids under the age of 20 took their own life in 2009.  I discovered from published reports there were 35% more suicides in Utah than deadly car wrecks in a four year span (2006-2010).

Utah holds the 8th highest adult suicide rate in the U.S. and holds the spot for 12th highest teen suicide in the nation with older adult rate coming in at 14th highest rate.

We need to be on our knees!  If you or someone you know is in trouble there is help.  The suicide prevention hotline is a toll free call!

Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, high suicide rate too. The mormons must be influencing that too I guess.
