Three False Prophecies from One False Prophet

14 June

Today we’re checking out three significant fails of the not-so-inspired prophet, Wilford Woodruff. Reading the things this guy had to say reminded me once again of how grateful I am that Jesus saved me!!

Remember, truth haters and deceivers have always been around so keep Peter’s warning in mind!

2 Peter 2:3; “And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”

Lie #1

In April 1898 Woodruff falsely predicted people sitting in the audience would see Jesus’ return.

Everyone from that time has since passed away, proving Mr. Woodruff a false prophet.

Conference Reports, April 1898, p.57; “I will say here that I shall not live to see it, you may not live to see it; but these thousands of Latter-day Saint children that belong to the Sabbath schools, I believe many of them will stand in the flesh when the Lord Jesus Christ visits Zion of God here in the mountains of Israel.”

Lie #2

While dedicating the Manti Temple in 1888, Mr. Woodruff boasted that Mormons would practice polygamy until Jesus’ return. Sixteen months later, he signed the public manifesto declaring the end of polygamy. The last of polygamy as they knew it stopped in April 1904.

My great-grandfather was born into one of the last plural marriages endorsed, and solemnized by the Church (March 1904). Jesus hadn’t returned then, and still hasn’t!

“We will not end the practice of plural marriage until the coming of the Son of Man”. Journal of John Henry Smith, 21 May 1888, LDS Church Archives

Lie #3

This false prophecy has always made me wonder why the Church went out of its way to convert my family who’s black Welsh. Everyone on my  father’s side is much darker than what the Church considered ‘acceptable’. I’ve also wondered what my family must have thought as they listened to the words of their new found spiritual leaders…

I’ve grabbed a few of his egregious comments to use for our example. To read the entire speech, the link is provided below. (Spelling and punctuation as in original.)

Journal of Wilford Woodruff, p. 63;

“And it is the decree of God that that mark shall remain upon the seed of Cane & the Curse until all the seed of Abel should be re(deem?)ed and Can will not receive the priesthood untill or salvation until all the seed of Abel are Redeemed.

Any man having one drop of the seed of Cane in him Cannot hold the priesthood & if no other Prophet ever spake it Before I will say it now in the name of Jesus Christ.

Let me consent to day to mingle my seed with the seed of Cane. It would Bring the same curse upon me And it would upon any man. And if any man mingles his seed with the seed of Cane the ownly way he Could get rid of it or have salvation would be to Come forward & have his head Cut off & spill his Blood upon the ground. It would also take the life of his Children.

Some may think I don’t know as much as they do But I know that I know more than they do. The Lord will watch us all the time. The Devil would like to rule part of the time But I am determin He shall not rule at all and Negros shall not rule us.” – Wilford Woodruff
