When Baby Kicks, Spirit Enters the Body

Journal of Discourses 18:258-9: “When the body is prepared, at the proper time, the spirit enters the tabernacle, and all the world of mankind in their reflections and researches must come to this conclusion, for the fact is they can come to no other—that when the mother feels life there is an evidence that the spirit from heaven has entered the tabernacle.” – Brigham Young

Psalm 139:13; “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.”

This is disturbing on so many levels. Let’s begin with looking at what God says. The NASB translates Ps. 139:13 this way; “For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.”

So if it’s up to the baby to kick because those legs belong to that baby this would mean it’s up to that baby when the spirit enters his/her body and not God.   Mormons have told me this isn’t the correct reading of what Young proclaimed, but I stand firm on what we have here.

The other item of note is the words of Young.  Look again at what he said; “and all the world of mankind and in the reflections and researches must come to this conclusion…”  Young was so smug with his proclamations.  Just as he was wrong w/ his analysis of the sun and moon being inhabited, he’s wrong again.

The only people that would agree with Young today are those who believe it’s okay to abort because that inside the mother is just a “fetus” and not life itself.  The “researches” today have proven life begins at conception.
