Journal of Discourses 6:6; “We say that God himself is a self-existent being. Who told you so? It is correct enough; but how did it get into your heads? Who told you that man did not exist in like manner upon the same principle? Man does exist upon the same principles. God made a tabernacle and put a spirit into it, and it became a living soul. [Referred to the old Bible.] How does it read in the Hebrew? It does not say in the Hebrew that God created the spirit of man. It says, “God made man out of the earth, and put into him Adam’s spirit, and so became a living body.
The mind or the intelligence which man possesses is coequal with God himself. I know that my testimony is true…” – Joseph Smith, Nauvoo, April 6, 1844
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4; “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
Exodus 6:3; “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.”
The term, ‘self-existent’, is defined as “existing independently of any cause, as God”. Likewise, in Hebrew the name, ‘Jehovah’, means ‘LORD’, which means exactly the same thing.
Here’s what it says in Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary –
‘from <H1961> (hayah); (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God :- Jehovah, the Lord. Compare <H3050> (Yahh), <H3069> (Yehovih)’
If you’re sharing an event with a group of Christians, and paraphrasing what God said in His word, people wouldn’t think you’re trying to deceive them. Alas, such was not the case when it came to Joe Smith.
Single-handedly, he tricked people into believing one lie after another about the status of mankind. In less than 15 years, Smith had systematically debased God while exalting mankind, and convinced 26,146 people he was right by the time of his death in June 1844.
The truth about the little passage of scripture Smith paraphrased is that when God created Adam, He breathed life into the man. Genesis 2:7 reads –
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
The tragedy in all this is found in the false teachings Mormons of today still embrace and hold dear. It can be encapsulated in one of the teachings of their late prophet, and Joseph Smith’s nephew, Joseph Fielding Smith –
“We will become gods and have jurisdiction over worlds, and these worlds will be peopled by our own offspring. We will have an endless eternity for this.”
If you’re LDS, ask yourself the question: how could God create something (or someone), if they’re self-existent?
Furthermore, how could the Mormon god be a man at one time, if he was self-existent?
Does this make sense to you?
Unfortunately, Smith’s lies will have a lasting legacy for quite some time. Although we’re seeing a lot of people abandoning this cult, there’s still a very long way to go so don’t forget to keep praying!
With Love in Christ;
