Jeremiah 23:21 “I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.”

linda-k-burton-largeCES Devotional for Young Adults, ‘Tuning Our Hearts to the Voice of the Spirit,’ January 2014; “The prophet Mormon’s counsel about following the Light of Christ can help us know how to receive the Holy Ghost. Mormon said:

Moroni 7:16–17 “For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.

“But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.” – Linda K. Burton

Jeremiah 14:14;”Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.”

We have a few questions/comments with today’s Mormon reference, so let’s take a look at them! FYI, this devotional talk stems from the series we’re looking at in our Witnessing Tip of the Day July 27-29.

Foregoing the topic of Ms. Burton using a false gospel, there’s five unmistakable lies listed in Moroni 7:15-16.

1.For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil

Not true. All men are born inherently evil and until they accept Christ they are enemies of God Romans 5:10.

2.for everything which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ

Not true. The Apostle Paul warned us of false apostles who charade as angels of light 2 Cor. 11:13-14.

3.wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God

Not true. We’re told to study His word to see when, or if, someone’s teachings are from God Acts 17:11.

4.for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one

Not true. Jesus told us Satan can trick even the elect Mt. 24:24.

5.neither do his angels

Not true. Paul warns us of angels of light who bring false gospels Galatians 1:6-9.

In addition to the false teaching above, Ms. Burton made reference to the Gospel Topics section of LDS.org which defines the ‘Light of Christ’ as follows;

“The Light of Christ is the divine energy, power, or influence that proceeds from God through Christ and gives life and light to all things. The Light of Christ influences people for good and prepares them to receive the Holy Ghost. One manifestation of the Light of Christ is what we call a conscience.”

There is nothing in the Bible that remotely suggests anything like the ‘light of Christ’. It sounds like some sort of New Age kinetic energy philosophy. Clearly, this  isn’t from our Lord and draws people away from Him instead of to Him.

Sadly, not one single thing Ms. Barton taught at this CES devotional was biblically sound. How tragic for those who listened to her speech, or read her message, not to mention the children and grandchildren she has great influence over.

Don’t forget to pray God would intervene and cause everyone involved to question her teachings. Thanks & God bless!
