Word of Wisdom

Dietary Laws

D&C 89:1-21; “A Word of Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—…

Col. 2:13-17And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.  16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Yet another way to control the masses.  Imagine a life with no caffeine…

Liquor, Joseph’s Ordinance of Selling

History of the Church 6:111; Ordinance on the Personal Sale of Liquors.

Section 1. Be it ordained by the City Council of Nauvoo, that the Mayor of the city be and is hereby authorized to sell or give spirits of any quantity as he in his wisdom shall judge to be for the health and comfort, or convenience of such travelers or other persons as shall visit his house from time to time.  Passed December 12, 1843.  Joseph Smith, Mayor. Willard Richards, Recorder.

Proverbs 20:1Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

So no one in the Church can sell, buy or consume liquor except Joseph Smith who owns the town liquor store.  That’s convenient.

Tea Drinking by Bishops

Journal of Discourses 12:28; “…a brandy sling, a little wine, or a cup of tea is good to revive them. Do not throw these things away, and say they must never be used; they are good to be used with judgment, prudence, and discretion. Ask our Bishops if they drink tea every day, and in most cases they will tell you they do if they can get it. They take it when they do not need it and when it injures them. I want to say to the Elders in Israel, this is not our privilege. We have a great many privileges, but to indulge in liquor or other things to our own injury is not one of them.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, April 7, 1867

Galatians 4:31So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

It’s never a good thing to be drunk – all things in moderation.

Tobacco, How to Chew While in Church

Journal of Discourses 8:362; Many of the brethren chew tobacco, and I have advised them to be modest about it. Do not take out a whole plug of tobacco in meeting before the eyes of the congregation, and cut off a long slice and put it in your mouth, to the annoyance of everybody around. Do not glory in this disgraceful practice. If you must use tobacco, put a small portion in your mouth when no person sees you, and be careful that no one sees you chew it. I do not charge you with sin. You have the “Word of Wisdom.” Read it.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, March 10, 1860.

Matthew 15:7-9Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.  9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Even though it was against the word of wisdom to chew tobacco here is a prophet of the Lord giving directions on how to use the sinful substance and in church no less.
