Women Need not Worry about Doctrine, Polygamy is Good

Journal of Discourses 12:312 “Our sisters need not be worried about any doctrine. Brother Penrose said it would be better for them if they believed in the doctrine of polygamy. But they do believe it; they know it is true, and that is their torment. It perplexes and annoys many of them, because they are not sanctified by the spirit of it; if they were there would be no trouble. I want to say this much—the sisters do believe it.” – Brigham Young, Old Tabernacle Salt Lake City, November 29, 1868

2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”.

There are a lot of things we could rattle on about in Mr. Young’s discourse about his utter disrespect for women and the Lord, but let’s keep focused on just a couple of items.

1.Everyone should concern themselves about doctrine. If you’re not going to worry yourself about the Bible, you’re going to find yourself in a world of hurt. The Lord has never given such bad counsel to anyone!

2.When/if women accept the false doctrine of polygamy it’s because they’ve been tricked into believing a lie. The Bible tells us of God’s abhorrence towards polygamy so the subject of needing polygamy is a moot point. See Lev. 18:18 and Deut. 17:17.

3.The Bible says this about wives:

Galatians 3:28; “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”

1 Peter 3:1; “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives.”

Now the reason I chose to use this particular verse is because of the hotly debated conversations the Mormons bring to me in the defense of the woman not being equal with her husband; therefore needing him for her ticket to heaven.

The word subjection in this verse is the same word used in 1 Peter 2:17 as the duty of citizens or being a part of the body of Christ. If you read further into this passage it goes on to say she is the weaker vessel (meaning physically, not spiritually), and if you can’t sit to pray with her then how can you submit yourself to Christ?

The Bible also emphasizes the need for all of us to know doctrine. If you take another look at 1 Peter 3:1 it says to be obedient so the husband can be led to God by the words of their wives. How can the words of a wife be a witness for the Lord if she doesn’t know doctrine?

You can read this and other examples on how the Church has twisted scripture to suit their own needs in our article Mormon Terminology here.

We pray Mormons stop to think about Brigham’s words because in reality, they’re still in effect today. We see this in their modern day directive, ‘follow the prophet’.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
