Visiting Teaching Message January 2017

20 January

John 4:14, 24; “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

flowers-cartoon-8 The Visiting Teaching Message for January 2017 focused on the purpose of the Relief Society while using three biblical passages.

Linda K. Burton, Relief Society General President, told members their purpose was to “prepare women for the blessings of eternal life”. That sounds interesting, however, nothing in the lesson explained what those blessings in the eternal bliss would entail.

Carole Stephens, 1st Counselor to Ms. Burton, stated –

‘Relief Society “is a temporal and spiritual work …That is what the women did in the Savior’s day, and that is what we continue to do.”3

‘As we look to the Samaritan woman at the well, who left her water pot and ran to tell others that Jesus was a prophet (see John 4:6–42), or to Phebe, who joyfully served others throughout her life (see Romans 16:1–2), we see examples of women in the Savior’s day who took an active part in coming unto Christ. It is He who opens our way to eternal life (see John 3:16).’

The heartbreaking reality of this is found in how they don’t believe it. Jesus’ name is a nothing but a by-product used in shadowy cameo appearances for the sole purpose of bringing in more traffic. Although His name is ‘used in the title of their Church’, Jesus isn’t the sole headline in Mormonism. Joseph Smith was, and still is, the prominent figure in Mormonism.

I’ll be calling my mother this week to see if she pulled vss. John 4:14, 24 to use in her lesson while visiting those who’ve been assigned to her area. Pray for her and me! These are two of the most pivotal, not to mention beautiful, verses in all of the Bible! God is spirit, and it’s through Him we have eternal life. It just doesn’t get any better than that folks!

This should be the focus of their mission while they serve others. Sharing the gospel, and what God can do for them is certainly one of the best gifts anyone could give someone.

John 4:14, 24; “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Instead of focusing on any of the biblical passages, they unfortunately turned their attention back to Joseph, and quoted what he told founding members of the Relief Society.

‘As we look to our pioneer sisters in Nauvoo, Illinois, who gathered in Sarah Kimball’s home in 1842 to form their own organization, we see God’s plan for bringing Relief Society into being and in line with the priesthood. … He [Joseph Smith] said that the Lord accepted their offering but that there was something better. “I will organize the women under the priesthood after the pattern of the priesthood…’

Question:

How is a manmade priesthood better than what Jesus already provided by giving His very life?

Please, pray for those who will be teaching this, and for those on the receiving end.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
