Tip of the Day, October 15

15 October

October 15 – 2 Chronicles 24:20; “And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.”

This verse is one of many examples in the Old Testament where the Spirit of God came upon one of His people.  In this particular example it is the spirit of prophecy that came upon Zechariah, not the Holy Ghost.  The Holy Ghost didn’t come to the people until our Heavenly Father sent Him after Jesus.

“…the scriptures speak of receiving the Holy Ghost, meaning the receipt and enjoyment following baptism of the gift and power of the Holy Ghost. Nephi spoke similarly when he said that the Holy Ghost “is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.” (1 Ne. 10:17.)”  Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 359.
