Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Their History

One of my favorite blogs is Mormon History where you’ll find all kinds of good things! Knowing the real history of the Mormon Church will give you insight you never get from the Church itself.

Every day I receive an e-mail with a little notice of  what happened on “This day in Mormon history”. While perusing this awesome site I found one entry I thought would be insightful for my readers.  The following is a perfect example of what’s wrong with polygamy. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the only reason why, but it just adds to the never ending pile of reasons.

July 28, 1873 – Ann Eliza Webb, plural wife of Brigham Young, sues for divorce, claiming neglect, cruel treatment, and desertion. Young pointed out in his defense, the inconsistency of granting a divorce and alimony for a marriage that was not legally recognized. Since he had married Mary Ann Angell at Kirtland, Ohio, in 1834 and was still lawfully married to her, he argued that the court should not grant the divorce and award alimony unless it was willing to recognize the validity of “plural or celestial marriages.” After two trials court found in Brigham’s favor.

Of course the courts ruled in Brigham’s favor. Would you expect anything less? http://onthisdayinmormonhistory.blogspot.com/

Hello. I’m glad to have found your site. My sister has been in the Mormon church for years. Talking to her is really difficult; especially as she is very good at addressing things in a manner that sounds like she’s saying the same thing that I’m saying. Using scriptural references doesn’t work because she doesn’t believe the bible to be completely accurate. To complicate things even further, she has now adapted a number of new-age teachings which are not what one would normally consider to line up with mormonism.

Shortly after I was born of the Spirit, something happened which didn’t seem significant at the time, however, a few weeks ago, it really hit me. I had gone to visit her to share my new faith in the Lord Jesus. Being a new Christian who had not been brought up in a chriatian home, I simply considered Mormonism to be another denomination such as baptists or methodists. As one might expect, she strove to steer me into the mormon church. I had made a statement concerning christian television when she mentioned “someday Jesus will appear on television and everyone will see him.”

In Matthew chap 24, it mentions that when Jesus reurns everyone will see him appear in the sky; not on television or through some other mechanical means. That would fall into the “behold he’s in the secret place” or “behold he’s in the desert”……or “behold, he’s in the television studio.” Innother words, one who expects such a thing will follow a false Jesus that manifests on the earth. It’s horrifying to consider how many biblical christians would fall for such a thing; especially in a season of tribulation where everything secure has been stripped away.

This conversation with my sister transpired in the fall of 1983; shortly after I was saved. A few months later, I learned some of the differences between mormonism and scriptural christianity. But my sister is still trapped in a worldview that mingles the teachings of mormonism with the more exotic elements of new age teaching. And she is in her senior years. Time is running out.

I don’t know when I’ll have time, but I really want to pour over your blog and prayerfully inquire understanding. It’s a spiritual battle and the enemy consistantly tries to convince me that she is deceived beyond reaching. The devil is a liar and, so long as she has breath, she is reachable.

Thanks for sharing this and for taking time to address an often misunderstood area. Blessings always in Jesus name.

      Dear Timbob –

Hello and thanks for visiting us! I want you to know we’ll be praying for your sister. I know how tough that is – many times they just shut down and won’t even speak to you because of what’s been said. That’s been my experience…sigh…

I always remember what Paul said in Ephesians 6 that this isn’t about flesh and blood but the powers and principalities of the air.

Unfortunately I’m sorry to say that I’m not surprised she’s adopting New Age views. I do like your insight about Jesus and the television! They’ll take one little verse and just run with it – sigh…my mother is the same way. The New Age thing should be expected when they don’t follow the Lord and have a tendency to grasp onto whatever is popular in society at the time. That’s why Mormonism has so many facets in their doctrines.

Joseph Smith incorporated whatever was going on at the time into Mormonism. He has a little bit of American folk religion, the traveling Egyptian papyri, Swedenborgianism which entailed 3 levels of heaven, marriage in heaven, celestial kingdom… And then he incorporated Masonry, the writings of Ethan Smith, Solomon Spaulding,..the list never ends.

Whenever I talk to my mother I’ll ask her what she thinks of a certain verse and leave it at that. She’ll usually ask me about it the next time we talk and I’ll tell her what the dictionary has to say about the interpretation of the word in the verse I shared. Sometimes she gets mad but she’s heard the truth and it gives her something to think about other than Relief Society chores. 😉

If there’s anything we can do don’t hesitate to let us know and thanks for your kind words!

      God bless you –
      Michelle

Timbob- when I got saved and left the Mormon church, my grandma had been a Mormon for 90 years… I witnessed to her as often as I could… And that is all we can do. I get frustrated sometimes when witnessing to people, whether they are Mormon, Muslim, or Atheist… I have to remind myself that it is very difficult to reason someone that is steeped in a religous belief system, into surrendering their lives to the will of God. It is the conviction of the Holy Spirit that “opens the eyes of our heart”. We too will be praying for your sister… Shoot me an e-mail at camden@lifeafter.org and I will send you my testimony.
Grace and Peace to you and your family

How about that! Brigham Young….they want polygamy ONLY when it favors them but want it rejected when it doesn’t. So much for polygamy and their Celestial heaven!
