Thought of the Day about Mormonism

Their Advertising Campaign for Mitt and Jon

According to the NY Times in November 2011, the Mormons hired two big name advertising agencies in 2009, Ogilvy and Mather and Hall and Partners, to gather info on what people thought of Mormons.  For those who answered in the focus groups they found that if they had any opinion at all it was negative, listing their reasons as ““secretive”, “cultish”, “sexist”, “controlling”, “pushy”, and “anti-gay””.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/18/us/mormon-ad-campaign-seeks-to-improve-perceptions.html?pagewanted=all

The Church’s response was to plaster their message with a multimillion dollar television, billboard and internet advertising campaign to get the word out that they’re normal people, just like you and me.

Their message went out to 21 markets (one of them here in Seattle).  And the biggest no-surprise comment from the Church is that the ads have nothing to do with Mitt running for president…yeah, okay…

The NY Times reported that in the past twelve months the website (Mormon.org)  listed in the ads has received more than one million people who’ve initiated online chats.

According to another online report by Public Radio, the Mormon Church spent $4.6 million in this campaign with their “ads airing nearly 800,000 times in 2011”.  My personal take on that is it seems like at least half of those were here in the Seattle area alone…

I’m just wondering how they can get away with dumping millions of dollars for an ad campaign for Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman while not fessing up this is what they’re really doing and who would ever be able to check up on this?

It’s just a little too coincidental.  Oh yeah and let’s not forget the Ancestory.com ads that play every other commercial.
