Thought of the Day about America’s Priorities

31 October

The effects of “Super Storm Sandy” will last a long time.  If you’ve seen the news lately scenes of homes up in smoke, cities under water and even the iconic boardwalks of Atlantic City and Coney Island have been changed – maybe forever.

While the news has a way of capitalizing on the death and destruction of these major weather events, sometimes they’ll show their human side and highlight a human interest story like we saw this time around.

In the midst of the storm a hospital in New York had to evacuate in a hurry. Some reports estimated that around 300 patients were taken to surrounding hospitals who still had power and weren’t under water. Twenty of those patients just so happened to be tiny babies who were either just born or were temporary residents of the ICU.

News stations across America globbed onto the story of paramedics loading babies into ambulances and even a nurse who was filmed sitting on gurney holding her precious cargo close to her chest in order to protect a very sick baby.

I, just like everyone else, love these stories!  This is when we get to witness the most basic natural instinct kicking in that God gifted us with. Without even thinking about costs we circle the wagons, protect the youngest from harm’s way and become a stalwart in that child’s life, if but for a moment in time.  It really is an amazing thing to watch!

And yet when I see these things another thought goes through my head…

Each year there are approximately 1.2 million abortions performed in America. And in case you’re wondering…there were 54,559,615 babies aborted from the time of Roe v. Wade in1973 to the end of 2011.

If we know through our natural instincts to protect the helpless babies in a major storm, why is it America sees no problem with abortion? If people across America are being charged with two murders when they’ve killed a pregnant woman, what’s the deal with our court system?  Why are we seeing state after state abolishing the death penalty of convicted murderers for humanitarian reasons and have no problem with handing out abortion pills to little girls in our country?  The state of Washington allows children of 14 yrs and older to have abortions without parental consent. You can’t get a full-fledged driver’s license in the state of Washington until you turn eighteen, but by golly you’re mature enough to know when you “need” to abort a child. I don’t think the lawmakers in Olympia get enough Vitamin D up here – their brains act like they’re soggy from all the rain we get.

A website called Number of Abortions http://www.numberofabortions.com/ has a clock counting the number of lives lost here in the U.S. as well as worldwide.  I kept track of when I loaded the page and after an hour I saw that over 4,500 babies lost their lives worldwide.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than grateful for the brave men and women who went out of their way to save those babies in New York.  You couldn’t pay me enough to be a medical professional, so it’s no exaggeration when I say I’m in awe!

I just don’t get the whole save the babies from a flooded building thing and choosing to end an innocent life because it’s not convenient to be pregnant.  It boggles my brain. How do you choose which child is worthy of saving? Did you ask the baby who’s about to lose their life if they wanted to die? Why don’t they have an opinion?

Almost fifty-five million Americans have died in almost thirty years because of this and yet it continues…and those numbers don’t account for the moms who died because of complications from the abortion.

Oh and by the way, if you e-mail to tell me this is why we need to vote for Romney I have some news. He says he’s pro-life, but his track record proves otherwise. Furthermore, his beloved heritage condones it as well in the case of incest, rape and the health of the mother.

I guess it doesn’t matter that it’s detrimental to the baby’s health.

Ensign, November 1998, pg. 71; Abortion is an ugly thing, a debasing thing, a thing which inevitably brings remorse and sorrow and regret…While we denounce it, we make allowance in such circumstances as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in serious jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have serious defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth.” – Gordon Hinckley
