Sin Nature; Christian v. Mormon

06 May

Mormon TerminologyCan you name the key differences between Mormonism and Christianity regarding man’s sin nature? If not, don’t feel too bad yet, because you’re not alone! Many Christians are unaware of what they are, due in part to the elusive nature of the terminology Mormons use to hide the truth.

All true Christians know, and accept the following key elements found in God’s word regarding a sin nature:

  • A sin nature is something everyone is born with.
  • Sin is an inherited trait, originating with Adam.
  • Man is separated from God because of sin.
  • Christians also know there is reconciliation with God after conversion, however, they’re still sinners – Romans chapter 7.

Romans 5:12; “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

For the Mormon, things aren’t quite so simple. While Mormons can agree they need a Savior, to admit they’re sinners…well, this just isn’t part of the Mormon vernacular. To quote many Mormons I’ve spoken to over the past 22+ years, ‘that just ain’t gonna happen’.

The disconnect in their reasoning is truly amazing when you think of the power Satan has to blind their minds to the truth!

The following key elements can be found in Mormonism regarding sin nature –

  • Mormons don’t believe in ‘original sin’

Mormon Doctrine, p. 550; “…modern Christendom has the false doctrine of original sin.”

  • Adam’s sin was as much a blessing as it was a curse

2 Nephi 2:25; “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.”

  • It was just as necessary for Adam to sin as it was for Christ to be crucified

LDS Scripture Teachings – ‘For God to take away the penalties of sin would eliminate agency…’

  • Mary was a virgin, but… LDS doctrines teach the Mormon god (an exalted, resurrected man), came down and impregnated his daughter, Mary.

Mormon Doctrine of Deity, p. 264; “When the time came that his first-born, the Savior, should come into the world and take a tabernacle, the Father came himself and favored that spirit with a tabernacle instead of letting any other man do it. The Savior was begotten by the Father of his spirit…that is all the organic difference between Jesus Christ and you and me.”

This is so wrong, and on so many different levels. For now, let’s stay focused on the issue of mankind being born with a sin nature.

We know for a fact that ‘Jesus was not born in sin, and He had no sin nature – Hebrews 7:26

  • Sin is not an attribute of mankind

Journal of Discourses 10:251-252; “I wish you to understand that sin is not an attribute in the nature of man…” – Brigham Young, October 6, 1863

  • Children are born perfect, and stay that way until they’re 8 yrs. old

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, p. 1052; “…baptism is not needed until children reach a state of accountability, generally at the age of eight years, for little children cannot sin…’

As you can see, rejecting what God’s word says about this one topic bleeds into a plethora of other issues. The damage Joe Smith caused when he uttered this false prophecy will continue to infect generations to come.

However, the hope we have will counteract all the evil! God has in the past protected His children, and will continue to do so! If you have loved ones in this church, don’t ever give up hope! If Jesus can save someone like me, He can and will save anyone!

At one time in my Mormon life, I believed each and every one of the key elements listed here. I was a 6th generation, TBM (true-believing-Mormon),  BIC (born in the covenant) Mormon, from head to toe. There was nothing I wouldn’t have done for Joe Smith, or the Mormon elohim. If you think your loved one is too entrenched in the Church for our sweet Jesus to hear your pleas, don’t forget what He’s already done! He can and does save Mormons all the time!

With Love in Christ;
