SIGNIFICANT ITEMS OF HOLY WEEK

10 April

The events of Holy Week are so meaningful that not mentioning them is tantamount to ignoring the fact Jesus left heaven, donned human flesh, and died, so we could live.

Quite sadly, that’s how I lived the first thirty years of my life while calling myself a Christian. Twenty-three years ago I was more concerned about what to put in my kids’ Easter baskets than I was about what I’d put in their hearts about Jesus.

Today we’re asking for Christians to pray for the Mormon people. At the time of this writing, the LDS Church just wrapped up their three day, bi-annual ‘General Conference’. A cursory glance over several of their numerous talks revealed the same story.

Their brief, yet obligatory mention of Christ, was but a ruse once again. In the 53+ years I’ve studied Mormonism, I’ve not come across a sermon lending itself to any reference of what took place during ‘Passion Week’. When God saw fit to save me on Palm Sunday 1993, it was the first time I’d ever heard of the event.

This week we’re looking at items of significance the Bible mentioned during Holy Week.

For a deeper look into our Lord’s activities where we’ve detailed all His events of that week, see our series in Easter and Holy Week articles.

Be blessed my friend!

Palm Sunday

Luke 19:38; ‘Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!’

Palm Trees & Branches

In the topic of palms during biblical times, there are four points to consider.

1.It was a common practice in the ancient world to greet royalty with a path of palm fronds as a walkway, much like we use a red carpet today.

2.Romans waved palms to honor their athletes at games, and also for the military; especially if  they had won a battle.

3.Palm trees were the picture of a righteous man. They always stand upright, and produced a very nutritious fruit (the date) which can sustain man for a long time. They’re also the picture of a righteous man who’s fruitful in all he does. See Significance of Palm Trees at Biblehub.com.

4.Our beloved Bible! – The Lord commanded palm fronds to be waved in celebration at the Festival of Booths. Leviticus 23:40

Donkey/Ass

Mark 11:1-6 “And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, 2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him. 3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither. 4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go.”

While the English term ‘ass’ can carry a negative tone, the word ‘donkey’ can be just as derisive. Overall, the animal itself has received a bad rap by Western society at large. The more proper term for this animal is in fact, ‘ass’, which the KJV referred to as a ‘colt’, because of its age.

Historically speaking, the ass is the mount of a king. 2 Sam 18:9; 19:26, 1 Kings 1:32-40, 44.

It’s also the mount of men of honor, or influence, as with Balaam in Numbers 22:28, and David’s prophet, and priest, with their men 1 Kings 1:44.

It could also be used as the mount of the wealthy, as seen with the Shunem woman (2 Kings 4:8, 24).
