Second Chance Theory – Mormon Quotes

Mormon Doctrine, pg. 685; There is no such thing as a second chance to gain salvation by accepting the gospel in the spirit world after spurning, declining, or refusing to accept it in this life. It is true that there may be a second chance to hear and accept the gospel, but those who have thus procrastinated their acceptance of the saving truths will not gain salvation in the celestial kingdom of God.

Luke 16:192530-31There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Then what pray tell is it Mr. McConkie?

You’ve quoted scripture from Luke. What is your interpretation of the verses quoted? What do they mean in your opinion? How do they relate to Mr. McConkie’s words? What is he saying?

    Thanks

These verses in Luke sounds to match Mr. McConkie’s quote exactly. “30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one (Lazarus or another dead person) went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”
They can still have the chance to be taught the gospel and accept in the spirit world it if not given the chance in this life, but those that have an adequate opportunity to embrace it and turn it down in this life their same spirit they have in their bodies now is the same one they have then. I think what Abraham is saying is that there are witnesses enough now (prophets, scriptures, etc.) and we need to have faith. If they won’t hear the prophets they’ll likely not be persuaded other ways.
