Salvation Chasm: Mormonism v. Christianity

12 January

Journal of Discourses 15:370-371; “He sends forth his servants with the truth, and he makes this promise—he made it through Joseph Smith—If they will believe in Jesus Christ, repent of their sins, be baptized for the remission thereof by one having authority, they shall receive the Holy Ghost and a testimony from Him as to the character of the work in which they have engaged.” – George Quayle Cannon, Salt Lake City, March 23, 1873 [emp. mine]

Romans 10:9-10; “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Acts 4:12; “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

Ironically, the two books listed from God’s word are ‘authorized canon’ in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, they’re only to be used as such when deemed they’ve been ‘translated correctly’ by those in authority.

The first reference listed from the Journal of Discourses, is no longer considered canonical in the eyes of the Church. Although they authored all 26 volumes, deemed them ‘as good as scripture’, and regularly quote them in conferences and magazines, members are discouraged from using them today.

Now with that caveat out of the way, we have to ask: is their mandate biblical?

Where in the Bible does it say we must have a testimony of the character of their work?

Where in the Bible does it say we can only be baptized by one who has authority?

Why are there extra-biblical mandates added upon what God said in Romans 10:9?

Why has the LDS Church virtually ignored what it says in Acts 4:12?

If you’re LDS, what’s your opinion of this?

We pray that as you read over these things, you’ll take a moment to ask the God of the Bible for clarification!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
