580 Reasons to leave the Mormon Church

580 REASONS (and counting) WHY YOU SHOULD LEAVE THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

91 – Capital Punishment in Utah

DS 1:136; “…the founders of Utah incorporated in the laws of the Territory provisions for the capital punishment of those who willfully shed the blood of their fellow men. This law, which is now the law of the State, granted unto the condemned murderer the privilege of choosing for himself whether he die by hanging, or whether he BE SHOT, AND THUS HAVE HIS BLOOD SHED IN HARMONY WITH THE LAW OF GOD; AND THUS ATONE, so far as it is in his power to atone, for the death of his victim. Almost without exception the condemned party chooses the latter death.

Luke 12:5; But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

92 – Casting Crowns before the Thrown

MD, pg. 173; Those who gain exaltation in the highest heaven of the celestial world shall wear crowns. Perhaps literal crowns may be worn on occasion — emblematic of their victory over the world and signifying that they rule and reign as kings and queens in the eternal house of Israel. But at all times they will be “crowned with honor, and glory, and immortality, and eternal life.” (D. & C. 75:5.)…In the gospel sense, a crown is the sign and symbol of eternal exaltation and dominion, of godhood in the kingdom of God. Our Lord has been seen in vision wearing “a golden crown” (Rev. 14:14; 6:2; 19:12), and those surrounding the throne of Deity have been seen similarly identified. (Rev. 4:4, 10.)…”

Revelation 4:10-11; The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

93 – Chairs or No Chairs in Temple

Mosiah 11:11; And the seats which were set apart for the high priests, which were above all the other seats, he did ornament with pure gold; and he caused a breastwork to be built before them, that they might rest their bodies and their arms upon while they should speak lying and vain words to his people.

1 Kings chapters 6-7 says nothing about chairs in the temple.  The only “seat” mentioned is the Mercy Seat which made of gold, covered the Ark of the Covenant and is where the priests would sprinkle blood on the Day of Atonement each year.

94 – Child Bearing Necessary

Articles of Faith, pg. 402; Grand as may seem the achievements of a man who is truly great, the culmination of his glorious career lies in his leaving posterity to continue, and enhance the triumphs of their sire. And if such be true of mortals with respect to the things of earth, transcendently greater is the power of eternal increase, as viewed in the light of revealed truth concerning the unending progresssion of the future state. Truly the apostle was wise when he said: “Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.”

Titus 3:4-7; But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

95 – Child Bearing; Is it Really the Works of the Lord?

Joseph Fielding Smith said this in DS 2:88; “President Brigham Young has this to say about birth control, an abomination practiced by so-called civilized nations, but nations who have forsaken the ways of life:  There are multitudes of pure and holy spirits waiting to take tabernacles, now what is our duty? To prepare tabernacles for them; to take a course that will not tend to drive those spirits into the families of the wicked, where they will be trained in wickedness, debauchery, and every species of crime. It is the duty of every righteous man and woman to prepare tabernacles for all the spirits they can.””

John 6:28-29; “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?  29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

96 – Child of God

MD, pg. 745; In one sense, the sons of God are the spirit offspring of the Father, the ones who “shouted for joy” when “the foundations of the earth” were laid. (Job 38:1-7.) But in a more particular and express sense, they are the ones who accept Christ and his laws and press forward in devotion to truth and righteousness, living “by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God” (D. & C. 84:44), until they become new creatures of the Holy Ghost and are thus spiritually begotten of God.

Romans 8:14-17; For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

97 – Children Cannot Sin

D&C 29:46-47; But behold, I say unto you, that little children are redeemed from the foundation of the world through mine Only Begotten; 47 Wherefore, they cannot sin, for power is not given unto Satan to tempt little children, until they begin to become accountable before me.

Romans 5:12; Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

98 – Chosen People of the Lord

This is the Truth, pg. 67; When you are baptized you are numbered among the chosen people of the Lord not because the Lord has chosen you but because you have chosen Him.

1 John 4:19; We love him, because he first loved us.

99 – Christ

Gordon B. Hinckley, LDSChurch News, June 20, 1998, p. 7; The traditional Christ of whom they [evangelical Christians] speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ of whom I speak has been revealed in this the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times. He together with His Father, appeared to the boy Joseph Smith in the year 1820, and when Joseph left the grove that day, he knew more of the nature of God than all the learned ministers of the gospel of the ages.

Rev. 22:12-13; ““Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. 13“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

100 – Christ Suffered in Proportion to Intelligence

Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:115; A person possessing the power of the Gods has that power to sustain him in all his trials and sufferings. He has power and faith to endure unto sweating blood, to bearing thorns, and to being nailed upon a cross, as patiently as did our Saviour. Is this speaking disparagingly of his character? Not in the least. Many of our people have suffered unto death. Could a God do more? He could not. Could he suffer more? Only in proportion to his intelligence, faith, and power, which also proportionally sustain him in his sufferings.

1 Corinthians 1:23, 25; But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

101 – Christians & Mormons

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 271; Traditional Christianity often defines Christian affiliation as the acceptance of certain beliefs and dogmas. Because Latter-day Saints do not accept certain extrascriptural dogmas-especially those bearing the philosophical overlay of much post-New Testament Christian teaching-some in other churches feel that Latter-day Saints cannot be Christian. They are not “orthodox” in this sense. But for the Mormon, right beliefs (orthodoxy) and right behaviors (orthopraxy) are those congruent with the revealed mind and will of the Lord. Some of the misunderstandings between traditional communities and the Latter-day Saints arise from this issue: whether Christians must first believe traditional, especially credal, dogmas in order to live “correct Christian lives.”

Philippians 1:6; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

102 – ChristianChurches on Earth for Centuries, None

Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses 18:172; But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be. They say, “We have built chapels unto the name of the Lord; we call our Churches Christian Churches, they are called the Church of Christ, St. John’s Church, St. Paul’s Church, St. Peter’s Church, and after others of the ancient Apostles;” and one who had never studied the pattern which God has given of the Christian Church would almost really believe that they are Christian Churches.

Matthew 28:18-20; And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.  19 ¶ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

103 – Christianity Corrupt as Hell

John Taylor, Journal of Discourses 6:167; There is not nation now that acknowledges that hand of God; there is not a king, potentate, nor ruler that acknowledges his jurisdiction. We talk about Christianity, but it is a perfect pack of nonsense. Men talk about civilization; but I do not want to say much about that, for I have seen enough of it. Myself and hundreds of the Elders around me have seen its pomp, parade, and glory; and what is it? It is a sounding brass and a tinkling symbol; it is as corrupt as hell; and the Devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work that the Christianity of the nineteenth century.

Acts 5:41-42; And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.  42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

104 – Christians are Pagans

Orson Pratt, JD 14:346; This class of men, calling themselves Christian, uniting with the various forms of the pagan religion, adopting many of their ceremonies and institutions, became very popular, and finally some of the pagans embraced Christianity and were placed, as it were, upon the throne, and what they termed Christianity became very popular indeed. How long has this order of things existed, this dreadful apostacy, this class of people that pronounced themselves Zion, or Christians, without any of the characteristics of Zion? It has existed for some sixteen or seventeen centuries.

John 14:16-18; And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

105 – No Christians on Earth

JD 2:196-197; “I do not wish to be understood that we are now living in a dark age of the world, but for the last fourteen hundred years the world have been enveloped in darkness, in which wickedness has ruled, and the powers of darkness have prevailed among the children of men, and the nations have been bound down by false traditions, and incorrect principles, but the day has now dawned, the dark clouds have now broken up and soon will pass away, and the sun of righteousness will arise in its glory, and show forth the light of heaven; and for that I am thankful…”

1 John 2:8-11; Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.  9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.  10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

106 – Christians, Evidence of Other

EM, pg. 270; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not see itself as one Christian denomination among many, but rather as God’s latter-day restoration of the fulness of Christian faith and practice…Other forms of Christianity…are viewed as incomplete, lacking the authority of the priesthood of God, the temple ordinances, the comprehensive understanding of the Plan of Salvation, and the nonparadoxical understanding of the Godhead.

1 John 3:14-15; We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.  15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

107 – Christian Observances; No Recognition of in LDSChurch

EM, pg. 553; Among the Latter-day Saints it is the accepted practice to hail Christ as Lord, King, and Messiah, and to shout hosannas to his holy name, on all days and at all times. But it is not the common practice to single out Palm Sunday for any special commemorative worship. Rather the Latter-day Saints memorialize the transcendent events of their era, such things as the coming of John the Baptist, the restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood, the conferral of the sealing keys by Elijah, and the organization of the Church again on earth.

Matthew 10:32-33; Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.  33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

108 – Christian; What is a

JD 24:140; I do not wish to reflect upon any other body of people or upon any sect; I believe there are thousands of excellent people in the world—people as good as any that are numbered in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—scattered through all the sects and in the Pagan world and in the infidel world. I do not confine my feelings of admiration to those who believe even in Jesus, the Son of God, whom I view as my Redeemer and my Savior. I believe that there are thousands, and it may be said millions of well-meaning, good people, whom God loves, that are numbered among the Pagans and that are numbered among the infidels to Christianity.

Romans 8:27, 33-37; And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.  33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.  34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.  35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.  37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

109 – Christmas Season, Gratitude in the

Gordon B. Hinckley, Ensign, December 1997; This is a season for giving and a time for gratitude. We remember with appreciation the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith, which is celebrated this same month of December, two days before Christmas…We stand in reverence before him. He is the great prophet of this dispensation. He stands at the head of this great and mighty work which is spreading across the earth. He is our prophet, our revelator, our seer, our friend. Let us not forget him. Let not his memory be forgotten in the celebration of Christmas. God be thanked for the Prophet Joseph.

Luke 2:30-32; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.  (Also see all of Luke chapter two.)

Church

110 – Church Can Save and Exalt Man

Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, pg. 21; This is our first interest as a Church-to save and exalt the souls of the children of men. There is no richer program anywhere in the world than we have in the Church today for the building of men and women and providing the answers to the problems that face parents, families, and individuals. (God, Family, Country, p. 43.)

2 Corinthians 4:1-5; Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.  3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.  5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

111 – Church Established

Mosiah 18:17; And they were called the church of God, or the church of Christ, from that time forward. And it came to pass that whosoever was baptized by the power and authority of God was added to his church.– Note: this “took place” in 147 BC

Acts 1:4; And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.”

112 – Church; Mormonism is Leaven to ChristianChurches of Today

Teachings of Lorenzo Snow, pg. 16; Mormonism has acted as a leaven upon other religious faiths. Consciously or unconsciously they have absorbed and utilized it. This is especially manifest in the growth of liberal ideas among the Protestant churches within the last half century. (2 January 1902, MS, 64:22.)

Jude 1:4; For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

113 – Church Records, Importance of Name on

Gospel Doctrine, pg. 109; Some people may not care very much whether their names are recorded or not but this comes from ignorance of the consequences. If their names are not recorded they will not only be cut off from the assistance which they would be entitled to from the Church, if they needed it, but they will be cut off from the ordinances of the house of God; they will be cut asunder from their dead and from their fathers who have been faithful, or from those who shall come after them who shall be faithful, and they will be appointed their portion with the unbelievers, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Galatians 5:3-4; For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.  4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

114 – Churches; TwoChurches Only on Face of Earth

George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth, pg. 324; After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon.

Mark 13:13; And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

115 – Civil War Prophecy

D&C 87:1-6; Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls; 2 And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place.3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.4 And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.5 And it shall come to pass also that the remnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.6 And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations.”

Jer. 14:14; Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility and the deception of their own minds.

116 – Communion

Articles of Faith, pg. 159; Soon after the Church had been organized in the present dispensation, the Prophet Joseph Smith was about to purchase wine for sacramental purposes, when a messenger from God met him and delivered the following instructions: “For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory—remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins. Wherefore, a commandment I give unto you, that you shall not purchase wine neither strong drink of your enemies; Wherefore, you shall partake of none except it is made new among you; yea, in this my Father’s kingdom which shall be built up on the earth.” fn Upon this authority, the Latter-day Saints administer water in their sacramental service, in preference to wine.

Matt. 26:26-28; And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

117 – Confounded, Denouncers are

D&C 71:10; And if any man lift his voice against you he shall be confounded in mine own due time.

1 Corinthians 1:27; But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.

118 – Contention; Don’t Contend with Other Faiths

Discourses of Joseph Smith, pg. 172; …preach Jesus Christ and him crucified; not to contend with others on account of their faith, or systems of religion, but pursue a steady course. This I delivered by way of commandment; and all who observe it not, will pull down persecution upon their heads, while those who do, shall always be filled with the Holy Ghost; this I pronounced as a prophecy, and sealed with hosanna and amen. (HC 2:431.)

Psalm 123:3-4; Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.  4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

119 – Contention: No Disputes Concerning Christians Allowed

3 Nephi 11:28-29; And according as I have commanded you thus shall ye baptize. And there shall be no disputations among you, as there have hitherto been; neither shall there be disputations among you concerning the points of my doctrine, as there have hitherto been.  29 For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.

1 John 4:1-3; Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.  2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

120 – Contention, Spirit of

Joseph F. Smith, Conference Report, April 1908, pg. 7; Indeed the spirit of contention is a thing not known among the Latter-day Saints. You find the spirit of contention only among apostates and those who have denied the faith, those who have turned away from the truth and have become enemies to God and His work. There you will find the spirit of contention, the spirit of strife. There you will find them wanting to “argue the question,” and to dispute with you all the time.

Galatians 5:19-21; Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

121 – Contradictions in Doctrine (Godhead)

Mosiah 13:34; “Have they not said that God himself should come down among the children of men, and take upon him the form of man, and go forth in mighty power upon the face of the earth?”

1 Cor. 14:33; For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

122 – Contrary Doctrine

D&C 1:35; For I am no respecter of persons, and will that all men shall know that the day speedily cometh; the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand, when peace shall be taken from the earth, and the devil shall have power over his own dominion. Then explain why the blacks weren’t worthy until 1978.

Romans 16:17-18; Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

123 – Converts, Convincing the

Especially for Missionaries, Vol. 1; The degree to which we effectively help people understand how the Book of Mormon fulfills the Lord’s divine purposes is the same degree to which we will see them become convinced that Joseph Smith was a prophet. That’s the same degree to which they will be committed to continually praying and studying the Book of Mormon. And soon they will see that the Book of Mormon does lead them to Christ. So you can see the purpose and power of the Book of Mormon, the keystone of our religion.

Ephesians 3:17-19; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

124 – Covenant, Everlasting

Apostle Erastus Snow, JD 24:161-162; This new and everlasting covenant reveals unto us the keys of the Holy Priesthood and ordinances thereof. It is the grand keystone of the arch which the Lord is building in the earth. In other words, it is that which completes the exaltation and glory of the righteous who receive the everlasting Gospel, and without it they could not attain unto the eternal power and Godhead and the fullness of celestial glory.

Jeremiah 32:40; And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

125 – Covenants

D&C 84:41; But whoso breaketh this covenant after he hath received it, and altogether turneth there from, shall not have forgiveness of sins in this world nor in the world to come.

Jeremiah 31:33-34; But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.  34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

126 – Covenants Broken is Death to the Soul

D&C 84:42; And wo unto all those who come not unto this priesthood which ye have received, which I now confirm upon you who are present this day, by mine own voice out of the heavens; and even I have given the heavenly hosts and mine angels charge concerning you.

Matthew 10:28; And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

127 – Covenant, Each Ordinance is Everlasting Covenant

DS 1:152; Each ordinance and requirement given to man for the purpose of bringing to pass his salvation and exaltation is a covenant. Baptism for the remission of sins is a covenant. When this ordinance was revealed in this dispensation, the Lord called it “a new and an everlasting covenant, even that which was from the beginning.”

Hebrews 7:23-24; And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

128 – Covenant, New & Everlasting

Improvement Era, June 1945; All Latter-day Saints enter the new and everlasting covenant when they enter this Church. They covenant to cease sustaining, upholding and cherishing the kingdom of the Devil. … They enter the new and everlasting covenant to sustain the Kingdom of God. … They take a vow of the most solemn kind, before the heavens and earth, and that, too, upon the validity of their own salvation, that they will sustain truth and righteousness instead of wickedness and falsehood, and build up the Kingdom of God, instead of the kingdoms of this world.

2 Corinthians 3:14-16; But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.  15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.  16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

129 – Covenant with God, not Jesus

Life of Joseph Smith, pg. 175; None but the genius of Jehovah could have inspired such a dispensation as that which Joseph opened… Joseph began, not with Jesus and his apostles, but with Jehovah and Abraham…True, the dispensation of Jesus was brought into the infinite embrace of Mormonism as one superior to that of Moses and the Prophets…In Jehovah, not Jesus, is the origin of the everlasting covenant and priesthood. Surely this is not blasphemy. It is truly a significant sign of the heathenish spirit of Romish Christianity, that any disciple of Hebrew faith should find it necessary to thus guard the mighty God of Israel

Hebrews 5:9; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.

130 – Convince LDS of Errors

The Seer, pg. 15; “…we ask from you the same generosity – protect us in the exercise of our religious rights – convince us of our errors of doctrine, if we have any, by reason, by logical arguments, or by the word of God, and we will be ever grateful for the information…

Jude 1:3; Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

131 – Create/Creation

TPJS, pg. 354; All the fools and learned and wise men from the beginning of creation, who say that the spirit of man had a beginning, prove that it must have an end; and if that doctrine is true, then the doctrine of annihilation would be true. But if I am right, I might with boldness proclaim from the house-tops that God never had the power to create the spirit of man at all. God himself could not create himself.

Isaiah 40:28; Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

132 – Creation

www.lds.org; Under the direction of Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ created the heavens

and the earth (see Mosiah 3:8; Moses 2:1). From scripture revealed through the Prophet

Joseph Smith, we know that in the work of the Creation, the Lord organized elements

that had already existed (see Abraham 3:24). He did not create the world “out of

nothing,” as some people believe.

Col. 1:15-16; Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16For by him

were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether

they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for

him.

133 – Cross

Ensign, May 1975, pg. 92; “…“If you do not use the cross, what is the symbol of your religion?”  I replied that the lives of our people must become the only meaningful expression of our faith and, in fact, therefore, the symbol of our worship.” – Gordon B. Hinckley

Gal. 6:14; But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

134 – Cross

Marion Romney, Ensign, pg. 6 May 1982; Having thus taken upon himself mortality, having suffered in Gethsemane for the sins of all men, and having given his life on the cross, there remained for him but to break the bonds of death—the fourth and last requirement—to complete his earthly mission as Redeemer.

Colossians 2:13-14; And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.

135 – Cross is Salvation to Those Saved

Answers to Gospel Questions 4:17; “To many, like the writer, such a custom is repugnant and contrary to the true worship of our Redeemer. Why should we bow down before a cross or use it as a symbol? Because our Savior died on the cross, the wearing of crosses is to most Latter-day Saints in very poor taste and inconsistent to our worship.”

1 Cor. 1:18; For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
