Reasons 446-499

446 – Priesthood; Eternal Priesthood vs. Eternal Gospel

DS 3:80-81; Eternal Nature of Priesthood…All men who assume authority, but who have not been properly called, will have to answer for their acts in the day of judgment. Nothing that they perform in the name of the Lord is valid, for it lacks the stamp of divine authority.

Revelation 14:6, 12-13; And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.  13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

447 – Priesthood Given/Man of Sin is Anti-Christ

Life of Joseph F. Smith, pg. 45-46; On the 3rd of June, the Elders from various parts of the country where they were laboring, came in; and the conference before appointed, convened in Kirtland, and the Lord displayed His power to the most perfect satisfaction of the Saints. The man of sin was revealed, and the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood (i.e. office of High Priest) was manifested and conferred for the first time upon several Elders.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4; Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

448 – Priesthood, Jesus Shares His

Jesus the Christ, pg. 30; It now becomes our purpose to inquire as to the position and status of Jesus the Christ in the antemortal world, from the period of the solemn council in heaven, in which He was chosen to be the future Savior and Redeemer of mankind, to the time at which He was born in the flesh.

Hebrews 7:24; But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

449 – Priesthood, Levitical Forever Hereditary

TPJS, pg. 319; Here is a little of law which must be fulfilled. The Levitical Priesthood is forever hereditary—fixed on the head of Aaron and his sons forever, and was in active operation down to Zacharias the father of John. Zacharias would have had no child had not God given him a son. He sent his angel to declare unto Zacharias that his wife Elizabeth should bear him a son, whose name was to be called John.

Matthew 5:17; Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

450 – Priesthood, Melchezidek Holds All Authority

TPJS, pg. 166; There are two Priesthoods spoken of in the Scriptures, viz., the Melchizedek and the Aaronic or Levitical. Although there are two Priesthoods, yet the Melchizedek Priesthood comprehends the Aaronic or Levitical Priesthood, and is the grand head, and holds the highest authority which pertains to the priesthood, and the keys of the Kingdom of God in all ages of the world to the latest posterity on the earth; and is the channel through which all knowledge, doctrine, the plan of salvation and every important matter is revealed from heaven.

Hebrews 5:5-6; So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.  6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

451 – Priesthood Needed for Salvation

HC 5:259; Whenever men can find out the will of God and find an administrator legally authorized from God, there is the kingdom of God; but where these are not, the kingdom of God is not. All the ordinances, systems, and administrations on the earth are of no use to the children of men, unless they are ordained and authorized of God; for nothing will save a man but a legal administrator; for none others will be acknowledged either by God or angels.

Hebrews 8:5-6; Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.  6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

452 – Priesthood, Requirements for

DS 3:247; “”There is the fact revealed through the Prophet Joseph Smith, who was of the lineage of Joseph through the loins of Ephraim, that the majority of the people who have been first to receive the gospel and priesthood of the latter-day dispensation, are descendants of some of the house of Ephraim scattered among the nations, and therefore, the stick of Joseph-the Book of Mormon-is in their hands.”

Exodus 28:1; And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.

453 – Principles of God is Obedience to Law; Brings Holy Spirit

David Cannon, Conference Report April 1904, pg. 97; The principles God has revealed for the redemption of His people do not manifest themselves to the people suddenly, but the man who conforms to the first principles, having faith in the Lord Jesus, repenting of his sins, going down into the water and being baptized for the remission of his sins, receives the Holy Ghost, which will lead him into all truth…but when he becomes derelict in his duties, and begins to neglect his prayers, and speak evil of the servants of God, criticising those who bear the Holy Priesthood who preside ever him, then the light begins to wane again, and the Spirit of God withdraws until he is left entirely to himself.

Matthew 23:4; For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

454 – Procreation, Act of is Man’s Highest Trait

EM pg. 1157; Latter-day Saints have an exceptionally positive view of procreation. After God commanded Adam and Eve to “multiply and replenish the earth” (Gen. 1:28), he pronounced all of his creation, including the power of procreation, “very good” (Gen. 1:31). President Joseph F. Smith noted, “The lawful association of the sexes is ordained of God, not only as the sole means of race perpetuation, but for the development of the higher faculties and nobler traits of human nature, which the love-inspired companionship of man and woman alone can insure” (IE 20:739).

Psalm 8:5-6; For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet.

455 – Pro-creation is Exaltation

B.H. Roberts, New Witness for God 1:461-462; What a revelation is here! As I have remarked elsewhere, fn instead of the God-given power of pro-creation being one of the chief things that is to pass away, it is one of the chief means of man’s exaltation and glory in that great eternity, which like an endless vista stretches out before him! Through it man attains to the glory of the endless increase of eternal lives, and the right of presiding as priest and patriarch, king and lord over his ever increasing posterity.

John 8:41-42; Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.  42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

456 – Prophecies aren’t Wrong

Follow the Living Prophets, pg. 247; “The Presidency, in directing the Church and its affairs and in counseling the people, do so under the directing power of this “light and truth.” When a man and the Presidency are both directed on the same subject by “light and truth,” there can be no conflict. And so, my brethren, all who are out of harmony in any degree with the Presidency have need to repent and to seek the Lord for forgiveness and to put themselves in full harmony…In response to a contention that to follow such a course is tantamount to surrendering one’s “moral agency,” suppose a person were in a forest with his vision limited by the denseness of the growth about him.”” – This statement was originally given by Marion Romney.

Jeremiah 17:9; The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

457 – Prophecy, False

D&C 112:15; Exalt not yourselves; rebel not against my servant Joseph; for verily I say unto you, I am with him, and my hand shall be over him; and the keys which I have given unto him, and also to youward, shall not be taken from him till I come.

Acts 8:9-20; But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one…20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

458 – Prophets, False LDS

Gospel Standards, pg. 15; JOSEPH SMITH AND MORMONISM. I have met hundreds of men who have said: “If it were not for Joseph Smith I could accept your religion.” Any man who does not believe in Joseph Smith as a prophet of the true and the living God has no right to be in this Church. That revelation to Joseph Smith is the foundation stone. If Joseph Smith did not have that interview with God and Jesus Christ, the whole Mormon fabric is a failure and a fraud. It is not worth anything on earth.

Deut. 18:20-22; But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

459 – Prophet is Constitution of Church

Answers: Straightforward Answers to Tough Gospel Questions, pg. 214; First, good doctrine will always sustain the idea that the living prophet, not scripture or any other document, is the constitution of the Church. The Church is not governed by canon law, we have no creed to which we must pay allegiance, nor do we have a written constitution.

Galatians 4:9; But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

460 – Prophet, Man Has Right to be False

History of the Church 6:304; But meddle not with any man for his religion: all governments ought to permit every man to enjoy his religion unmolested. No man is authorized to take away life in consequence of difference of religion, which all laws and governments ought to tolerate and protect, right or wrong. Every man has a natural, and, in our country, a constitutional right to be a false prophet, as well as a true prophet.

Matthew 7:15; Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

461 – Prophet, Test of a True

Evening and Morning Star 2:105; The only way of ascertaining a true prophet, is to compare his prophecies with the ancient word of God, and see if they agree, and if they do and come to pass, then certainly he is a true prophet: For it is not possible that the Lord will suffer FALSE prophets, to bring forth the truth, moved upon by the Holy Ghost, for it is written that the Holy Ghost dwelleth not in unholy temples. By their fruits shall they be known.

Jeremiah 23:32-40; Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.  (Also see vs. 33-40.)

462 – Prophet, We Thank Thee o God for a

LDS Hymn #19; We thank thee, O God, for a prophet To guide us in these latter days.
We thank thee for sending the gospel To lighten our minds with its rays.”

Psalm 119:104-105; Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.  105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

John 16:26-27; At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

463 – Prophets Words Outweigh Scripture

Conference Report, October 1897, pg. 18-19; “…when compared with the living oracles those books are nothing to me; those books do not convey the word of God direct to us now, as do the words of a Prophet or a man bearing the Holy Priesthood in our day and generation. I would rather have the living oracles than all the writing in the books.’ That was the course he pursued. When he was through, Brother Joseph said to the congregation; ‘Brother Brigham has told you the word of the Lord, and he has told you the truth.

Hebrews 2:1-3; Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.  2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.

464 – Purpose of Life to Obtain Bodies

Joseph Smith, Seeker After Truth, pg. 160; By the “fall,” death of mortal bodies had come into the world. Yet the main purpose of earth-life is to secure a material body for eternal association with the spiritual body.

Luke 10:20; Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

465 – Queen of Heaven

MD, pg. 613; If righteous men have power through the gospel and its crowning ordinance of celestial marriage to become kings and priests to rule in exaltation forever, it follows that the women by their side (without whom they cannot attain exaltation) will be queens and priestesses. (Rev. 1:6; 5:10.) Exaltation grows out of the eternal union of a man and his wife. Of those whose marriage endures in eternity, the Lord says, “Then shall they be gods” (D. & C. 132:20); that is, each of them, the man and the woman, will be a god. As such they will rule over their dominions forever.

Jeremiah 7:18; The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

466 – Questioning

Conference Report, October 1984, pg. 104; No true Latter-day Saint will ever take a stand that is in opposition to what the Lord has revealed to those who direct the affairs of his earthly kingdom. No Latter-day Saint who is true and faithful in all things will ever pursue a course, or espouse a cause, or publish an article or book that weakens or destroys faith.

1 Cor. 13:11-12; When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

467 – Race Issue

Moses 7:8; For behold, the Lord shall curse the land with much heat, and the barrenness thereof shall go forth forever; and there was a blackness came upon all the children of Canaan, that they were despised among all people.

Genesis 6:10; And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

468 – Religion, Live Your

JD 4:219-220; The time has been in Israel under the law of God, the celestial law, or that which pertains to the celestial law, for it is one of the laws of that kingdom where our Father dwells, that if a man was found guilty of adultery, he must have his blood shed, and that is near at hand. But now I say, in the name of the Lord, that if this people will sin no more, but faithfully live their religion, their sins will be forgiven them without taking life.

2 Peter 2:1-3; But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.  2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.  3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

469 – Religion, 666 Denominations of Protestants

Orson Pratt, JD 14:347-348; Because of their protestations against the mother Church they were called Protestants. They pronounced her the whore of all the earth; they declared that she had no authority, that she had none of the blessings and gifts which characterized the ancient Christians. They came out and established other Churches…We hunt for them in vain. Go to all these 666 different Protestant denominations that have come out from the mother Church, and inquire of them, Have you inspired men among you? and their united voice is that God speaks no more in our day…We enquire, “What have you?” “Oh we have 666 different denominations and we have surnamed ourselves Christians. We are Bible Christians.” How mistaken they are! Bible Christians were those who believed in having apostles and inspired prophets among them. Bible Christians could receive more revelation and add more books to the Bible; Bible Christians could converse with the Lord, and oftentimes beheld the face of Jesus…Now suppose we take their word for it! I do, I really believe them. I think they tell the truth when they say they have no inspired men. I believe them when they say they have neither prophets nor apostles among them. Why do I believe them? Because they have received no new books in addition to the Bible, and whenever God had a people on the earth they were constantly giving new books, inspired from on high, and when that ceases we draw the conclusion that inspiration has ceased.

Matthew 5:21-22; Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

470 – Religious Freedom, Tolerance of

Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith’s Teachings, pg. 540; Thus were we persecuted on account of our religious faith—in a country the Constitution of which guarantees to every man the indefeasible right to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience—and by men, too, who were professors of religion, and who were not backward to maintain the right of religious liberty for themselves, though they could thus wantonly deny it to us. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 1:97)

2 Timothy 4:2; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

471 – Restoration

“When Jesus Christ was on the earth, He established His Church among His followers. After His Crucifixion and the deaths of His Apostles, the fulness of the gospel was taken from the earth because of widespread apostasy. Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ restored the fulness of the gospel. The true Church of Jesus Christ is on the earth again. Because of the Restoration, the teachings and ordinances necessary for salvation are available to all people.”

Holman Bible Dictionary; “Promises deliberately have a continuous fulfillment for generation after generation while prophecies invoke promise when they wish to speak to the distant future. 4. The promise of God is unconditional while most prophecies are conditional and have a suppressed “unless” or “if” you repent attached to their predictions of judgment.”

John 14:23, Matt. 16:18, John 16:33, et al.

472 – Restoration Requires Sacrifice

TPJS, pg. 172; It will be necessary here to make a few observations on the doctrine set forth in the above quotation, and it is generally supposed that sacrifice was entirely done away when the Great Sacrifice [i.e.,] the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus was offered up, and that there will be no necessity for the ordinance of sacrifice in future; but those who assert this are certainly not acquainted with the duties, privileges and authority of the Priesthood, or with the Prophets.

Galatians 3:22; But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

473 – Repent, If We Err, We will

Messenger and Advocate, October 1834-September 1835, Vol. 1 April, 1835 No. 7 108; If a former opinion of ours is incorrect, if we have, through the influence of those whom we thought possessed understanding, embraced a system which we afterward fear is incorrect, what do we lose, if, after investigation, it proves to be so? The answer is at hand we lose a bad principle, are convinced of a false system, and are thus prepared to embrace the truth whenever it shall be presented: and to be able to make this exchange will rejoice the heart of every individual who rightly considers the value of eternal life.

1 Corinthians 3:13; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

474 – Resurrected Prophets

Joseph Smith, Seeker After Truth, Prophet of God, pg. 28; That night after retiring, he sought the Lord in earnest prayer to forgive his follies, and to give him further light. While he was thus praying, the room became filled with light until it was “lighter than noon day.”…A glorious personage appeared at his bedside, who declared himself to be a heavenly messenger, Moroni by name, an ancient American resurrected prophet, sent by God, he said, to prepare Joseph further for the work he was to do.

Colossians 2:6-8; As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.  8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

475 – Revelations

MD, pg. 650; The presence of revelation in the Church is positive proof that it is the kingdom of God on earth. And because the Lord is no respecter of persons he will give to any person, who abides the law entitling him to know, personal revelation of the divinity of the Church and of the fact that it is being led by revelation today. Indeed, for those who accept all the revelations which God gives in any particular day there is peace and joy and a hope of salvation. For those who reject these revelations there awaits the damnation of hell.

Hebrews 1:1-2; God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

476 – Revelations; Past Revelations don’t Matter

All Are Alike Unto God, Bruce McConkie Speech at BYU, June 1978;We get our truth and our light line upon line and precept upon precept. We have now had added a new flood of intelligence and light on this particular subject, and it erases all the darkness and all the views and all the thoughts of the past. They don’t matter any more.  It doesn’t make a particle of difference what anybody ever said about the Negro matter before the first day of June of this year, 1978. It is a new day and a new arrangement, and the Lord has now given the revelation that sheds light out into the world on this subject. As to any slivers of light or any particles of darkness of the past, we forget about them.

Galatians 4:8-9; Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.  9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

477 – Revelations and Scriptures Shouldn’t Conflict

Marking the Scriptures, pg. 2; It makes no difference what is written or what anyone has said, if what has been said is in conflict with what the Lord has revealed, we can set it aside. . . . We have accepted the four standard works as the measuring yardsticks, or balances, by which we measure every man’s doctrine. (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, Bookcraft, 1977, 3:203.)

Romans 15:4; For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

478 – Revelation is Source of All Truth

JD 3:209; REVELATION IS THE SOURCE OF ALL TRUTH…No person receives knowledge only upon the principle of revelation, that is, by having something revealed to them.… Who reveals? Everybody around us; we learn of each other. I have something which you have not, and you have something which I have not; I reveal what I have to you, and you reveal what you have to me. I believe that we are revelators to each other. Are the heavens opened? Yes, to some at times, yet upon natural principles, upon the principle of natural philosophy. -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 3:209, February 17, 1856.

1 John 1:1-3; That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

479 – Righteous; Stay Righteous to See God’s Face

D&C 93:1; Verily, thus saith the Lord: It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face and know that I am.

1 Corinthians 4:3-6; But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.  5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.  6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

480 – Rock is Revelation

Discourses of J. Smith, pg. 67-68; John was a priest after the order of Aaron, and had the keys of that priesthood, and came forth preaching repentance and baptism for the remission of sins, but at the same time cried out, “There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose,” and Christ came according to the words of John, and he was greater than John, because he held the keys of the Melchizedek Priesthood and kingdom of God, and had before revealed the priesthood of Moses, yet Christ was baptized by John to fulfill all righteousness; and Jesus in his teachings says, “Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” What rock? Revelation. (HC 5:258.)

Matthew 15:14; Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

481 – Sacrament; On the night before His Crucifixion, Jesus Christ met with His Apostles and instituted the sacrament (see Luke 22:19–20). After His Resurrection, He instituted the sacrament among the Nephites (see 3 Nephi 18:1–11). Today the sacrament is an ordinance in which Church members partake of bread and water in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s atoning sacrifice. This ordinance is an essential part of worship and spiritual development. Through this ordinance, Church members renew the covenants they made with God when they were baptized.

Holman Bible Dictionary; LORD’s SUPPER – A memorial celebrated by the early church to signify Jesus’ sacrificial death for humankind’s sin. The form of the observance was established by the Lord at the Last Supper when He symbolically offered Himself as the paschal Lamb of atonement. His actual death the next day fulfilled the prophecy. Only Paul uses the phrase “Lord’s Supper” (1 Cor. 11:20), although implication of it is made in Revelation 19:9 (“marriage supper of the Lamb”). Church fathers began to call the occasion the “Eucharist” (that is, “Thanksgiving”) from the blessing pronounced over the bread and wine after about A.D. 100. Church groups celebrate the Lord’s Supper regularly as a sign of the new covenant sealed by Christ’s death and resurrection.”

482 – Sacrificing Children to Molech

3 Nephi 17:23; And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them: Behold your little ones.  24 And as they looked to behold they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them.

Leviticus 18:21;And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God:  I am the LORD.

Molech is found in Strong’s Concordance and in Hebrew it means the chief deity (king) of the Ammonites.  #4427-4432 gives the definitions and derivatives of this name.

483 – Salvation, Belief in Jesus Saves You

Helaman 14:8; And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall believe on the Son of God, the same shall have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

484 – Salvation; By Grace Ye are Saved

4th Article of Faith; We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

1 John 1:7; But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

485 – Salvation for the Dead

DS 2:156; But the Jews rejected him, and his testimony, and with violence drove him from the city. Nevertheless, he continued to proclaim liberty to the captives, declaring that he came not alone to save the living but also to save the dead…ENOCH’S KNOWLEDGE OF SALVATION FOR DEAD. This vicarious salvation for the dead is not a new doctrine. It is new and strange for this generation it is true, but only because of a lack of comprehension of the revelations of the Lord. The Prophet Joseph Smith said it is the burden of the scriptures. It has been taught among the Lord’s people from the earliest times.

Psalm 49:7; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.

486 – Salvation Given because of Joseph Smith

MD, pg. 396; Joseph Smith’s greatness lies in the work that he did, the spiritual capacity he developed, and the witness he bore of the Redeemer. Since the keys of salvation were restored to the Prophet, it is in and through and because of his latter-day mission that the full redemptive power of the Lord has again become available to men. It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men. “Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it.” (D. & C. 135:3.)
