Question: How Does One Baptize a Spirit?

03 January

Journal of Discourses 23:330-331; “It is our duty to build these temples. It is our duty to enter into them and redeem our dead. Joseph Smith is preaching to the spirits in prison; so are all the elders who have died in the faith. There are millions of them there, and they must have the gospel offered to them.

The Bible says that once we’ve died, that’s it; there’s nothing else left we can do afterwards!

2 Corinthians 6:2

“(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)”

No Water Baptisms for Spirits

Joseph Smith and others cannot baptize the spirits in water, it is not the law; but their posterity, their sons and daughters who are living in the last dispensation, are expected to go into these temples and there redeem their dead. …

Where is this ‘law’ in the Bible?

How would someone baptize a spirit?

This statement sounds like Mr. Woodruff is making things up as he goes along.

Where in the Bible does it say these things?

230,000+ Works for the Dead

We have one of these temples finished, and we are doing a great work in that temple. A hundred and sixty-two thousand persons have been baptized for the dead, and nearly seventy thousand endowments have been given in that temple. We have only just begun this work.

Imagine the things left undone because of time they spent doing dead works…now just imagine that when Woodruff gave this speech, the St. George Temple had only been in operation for six years. It opened in 1871, his speech was given in 1877.

In six  years they had performed more than 230,000 rituals for dead people.

We are living in the flesh and have the privilege of receiving the gospel of Christ for ourselves. Our forefathers had not this privilege; and as their posterity when we meet them in the spirit world we shall have the joy and satisfaction of knowing that we did our duty by them while here upon the earth.

The words of this man are wrong. The Bible tells us that everyone will have the opportunity to know God during their lifetime, and no one is without excuse.

Romans 1:19 “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.”

We occupy a position in this capacity towards them the same as we do to this generation. We occupy the position of saviors upon Mount Zion.” — Wilford Woodrruff, Salt Lake City, December 10, 1882, Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, p. 149.

Um…let’s take a look at what it says in His word about Mt. Zion. In Hebrews 12:18-22 it says –

“For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more: 20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: 21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:) 22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels.”

Now, do you really suppose this has anything at all to do with the LDS?

Jesus is that Savior on Mt. Zion, not Mormons. It’ll be in Jerusalem, not Utah, and it’ll be iin accordance with what God says, not Joe Smith.

Lastly, in his lengthy speech, nowhere did Mr. Woodruff explain why Smith couldn’t baptize spirits, or where this law came from… why is that? Nor did Mr. Woodruff give any scriptural references. He used biblical terminology, but had nothing to back it up! And let’s not forget dear ones, doing the things he’s talking about is necromancy which is strictly forbidden by the Lord.
