If Polygamy is Untrue, All Faith is Vain

Journal of Discourses 21:296; “…if plurality of marriage is not true or in other words, if a man has no divine right to marry two wives or more in this world, then marriage for eternity is not true, and your faith is all vain, and all the sealing ordinances, and powers, pertaining to marriages for eternity are vain, worthless, good for nothing; for as sure as one is true the other also must be true.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, July 18, 1880

1 Corinthians 15:17; “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.”

Yikes!

While many may dismiss Orson Pratt’s assessment, and classify it as ‘just his opinion’, this man’s words were spot on. Let’s check out the real issues Mr. Pratt brought to light shall we?

Problem #1 –

The Church has used biblical phrases to support their unbiblical doctrines, and rejected the Bible at the same time. If you’re LDS and don’t believe the Bible has been translated correctly, why do you use biblical terminology? How do you know the phrase you’re using has been translated correctly?

Problem #2 –

The ultimate goal for all Mormons is to become a god someday. The mainstream LDS Church no longer practices polygamy, so now what? If you’re not practicing polygamy, how will you become a god/goddess?

Problem #3 –

If you’re LDS, why are you taking vows to submit yourself to an ideology that no longer exists?

The ideology of taking oaths to become gods is based upon Joe Smith’s revelations. When the Church complied with the feds to discontinue polygamy, they never addressed the issue of godhood status. They merely omitted phrases/teachings with polygamy mandates, went along their merry way, and members didn’t blink an eye.

Today the Church has replaced the old doctrines with meaningless filler words and phrases like ‘ordinances’, ‘laws of the gospel’, and ‘forever families’, to shift the focus from original requirements for salvation.

What they fail to realize is that the oaths they’re taking in the temples today are still promises to the same god who can’t promise them anything because they’re not fulfilling their end of the Mormon covenant of polygamy.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Church handles D&C 132 in their Sunday school curriculum. This year they’re studying Doctrine and Covenants, and Church History. Section 132 is Smith’s prophecy on becoming gods by practicing polygamy.
