Moroni, Devil, Angel of Light

26 February

Doctrine and Covenants 128:20 “And again, what do we hear? Glad tidings from Cumorah! Moroni, an angel from heaven, declaring the fulfilment of the prophets—the book to be revealed. A voice of the Lord in the wilderness of Fayette, Seneca county, declaring the three witnesses to bear record of the book! The voice of Michael on the banks of the Susquehanna, detecting the devil when he appeared as an angel of light! The voice of Peter, James, and John in the wilderness between Harmony, Susquehanna county, and Colesville, Broome county, on the Susquehanna river, declaring themselves as possessing the keys of the kingdom, and of the dispensation of the fulness of times!”

1976 Doctrine and Covenants Intro, 3rd Paragraph “This took place in the early spring of 1820.  In September, 1823, and at later times, Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni, an angel of light, who revealed the resting place of the ancient record from which The Book of Mormon was afterward translated”.

2 Corinthians 11:14 “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

After I left Mormonism it didn’t take long to figure out just how conniving Smith was. Many of his actions were shrouded in secrecy and yet his mocking of God is blatantly obvious once you put the pieces together.

The first few years of discovery were brutal as they are for everyone who leaves the Church. Realizing the level of animosity Smith must’ve had in his heart was nothing short of shocking as it never occurred to me that he was that type of person and that brings us to our text today.

This has to be one of the very worst things in the teachings/writings of Mormonism.

Not long after I left I came across the nonsense in the D&C revealing that Moroni was an angel of light. A sick feeling in the pit of my stomach came over me as thoughts of what the Bible says came rushing to the forefront of my mind. After putting it side-by-side with Joseph Smith’s story of an ‘angel’ who visited three times in one night, the story of Peter denying Jesus three times before daybreak and Paul’s warning in second Corinthians, I was left with no doubt that Moroni the beloved angel that sits atop every Mormon temple, was a glorified version of Satan. And this is what Hinckley said represented the Mormon gospel…ugh…

Today I’m convinced Smith was taunting people. He proclaimed he loved God yet we find numerous ‘incidents’ where he obviously didn’t follow Him, nor honor Him in  word and deed. You can read about Smith’s other experiences in our article Moroni the Angel of Light.

In all there are at least four Mormon references where Smith spoke about an angel of light. Twice he is identified as Moroni and twice as the devil.
