Mormons Still Believe Bible Insufficient, just as Orson Pratt Said

2 Corinthians 11:13-14; “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,  transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

Orson Pratt’s Works, Divine Authenticity of the Book of Mormon, p. 171

orson-pratts-worksOrson Pratt was a prolific writer, and spent the majority of his years proclaiming the Mormon gospel whenever the chance presented itself.

In the 1840’s Pratt lived and worked in Liverpool, England as the publisher, editor, and author of the Millennial Star, a Mormon owned newspaper filled with the latest news of the Church for members in Great Britain who couldn’t easily obtain stateside news.

From those writings, Pratt compiled a set of pamphlets he could easily distribute throughout his travels in the British Isles. The pamphlets were different compilations on the beliefs of the LDS Church, which of course elevated the Mormon Church and its prophet Joseph, while tearing down traditional Christianity. After his death, the book, Orson Pratt’s Works’, was published by the Church and contained a great portion of those pamphlets, along with other writings from the newspaper he published.

The following quote comes from one of the pamphlets he distributed throughout Great Britain –

“Divine Authenticity of the Book of Mormon, Chapter VII …

If Protestants suppose the Bible to be a sufficient guide, as they are constantly telling their followers, will they be so kind as to point out what part of that sacred book, called Luther, Calvin, Cranmer, Wesley and hosts of others, to preach, baptize and administer many other ordinances such as the ancient Church administered? Indeed, what part of the Bible calls and commissions any of the ministers of the present day? It can be said without any fear of contradiction, that the Bible nowhere has called a single individual to the work of the ministry for the last seventeen centuries. Therefore, for the calling of the ministry, the Bible is an insufficient guide.” – Orson Pratt

Isaiah 40:8; “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

As you’re probably aware, the only thing that’s changed in Mormonism is the name of their latest prophet. They still denounce the Bible with their promotions for the Book of Mormon. You can see this more definitively in their incessant reminders to members they should follow the prophet.

In true Mormonism, there is no such thing as taking the Bible at face value. Every so often you’ll see the obligatory bible verse thrown in for good measure, but aside from this, there is no such thing as ‘bible studies’ in Mormonism.

The majority of what their original apostles, and prophets proclaimed is still in effect today in the 21st century.

If the Church was authentic, they wouldn’t promote listening to mankind for directions, nor would they point to another gospel. The only people who engage in this type of behavior is what Paul refers to as an angel of light.

2 Corinthians 11:13-14; “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,  transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
