Mormonism’s Ugly Underbelly – Fulfilling Smith’s Prophecy by Breeding with Native Americans

03 November

People often ask us at LAM if anyone knew what Smith and his friends were up to in the early days of Mormonism.

The answer to that is a resounding, YES!

Books and pamphlets were written exposing the Church’s nefarious deeds. Conferences were held, meetings scheduled, and an all out propaganda machine was in full swing denouncing what Smith and company were doing. For many, it wasn’t just the fact he was spreading a false gospel, oh no. Many were up in arms because of the wanton sexual licentious they engaged in, reminiscent of the days in Sodom and Gomorrah. People were horrified learning about the spiritual wifery, and swapping wives amongst themselves for a higher status.

Many dubbed their activities as nothing less than prostitution on the Western Frontier.

Today we’re highlighting two of the more well known ‘anti-Mormons’ of the time; John Bowes, and John Hyde, Jr. We’ve pulled a quote from each of their books to give readers an idea of what others thought of Mormonism.

We’re also wondering…

What was Smith thinking by suggesting white men should marry Native Americans to wash out the curse he claims God put on them?

It totally contradicts his so-called prophecy in the BoM –

2 Nephi 5:23; “And cursed shall be the seed of him that mixeth with their seed; for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it, and it was done.”

One other quote worthy of note comes from a letter of WW Phelps to Brigham Young about Smith’s prophecy –

“Verily, I say unto you, that the wisdom of man, in his fallen state, knoweth not the purposes and the privileges of my hold priesthood, but ye shall know when ye receive a fullness by reason of the anointing: For it is my will, that in time, ye should take unto you wives of the Lamanites and Nephites, that their posterity may become white, delightsome and just, for even now their females are more virtuous then the gentiles.”- Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., 1831 revelation, recorded in a letter from W.W. Phelps to Brigham Young, dated August 12, 1861

Prophet Brigham Young, quoted in:

The Abominations of Mormonism Exposed, pp. 58-59; “We are now going to the Lamanites, to whom we intend to be messengers of instruction… We will show them that in consequence of their transgressions a curse has been inflicted upon them – in the darkness of their skins. We will have intermarriages with them, they marrying our young women, and we taking their young squaws to wife. By these means it is the will of the Lord that the curse of their color shall be removed and they restored to their pristine beauty…” – John Bowes

Mormonism: Its Leaders and Designs, pp. 109-110; “… Brigham now teaches that ‘the way God has revealed for the purification of the Indians, and making them “a white and delightsome people,” as Joseph prophesied, is by us taking the Indian squaws for wives!!’ Accordingly several of these tawny beauties have been already ‘sealed’ to some of the Mormon authorities.” – John Hyde, Jr.

John Hyde, Jr., was a British convert who soon after his conversion to Mormonism learned the truth about Mormonism.

He became Public Enemy #1 for the Church in those early days, and widely known for his outspoken behavior. His book, ‘Mormonism Its Leaders and Designs’ exposed the darkness of Smith’s gospel, and activities of the Church’s polygamy practices.

After seeing just a glimpse of what the Church was doing back then, does it sound like a godly organization to you? The Lord tells us to be above reproach. Where was their moral compass?

Titus 1:6-9; “If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; 8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.”
