Mormon Quotes from Mormon Leaders – Life After Ministries

Mormon Quotes

Life After Ministries has collected a series of quotes from Mormon leaders of past and present that should shed some light on the motives of the Mormon Church.  Please don’t just take our word for it. Read what they have to say and then do what Mormons do with the Book of Mormon — pray about it.  Let God tell you if what they say is from Him.

From JOSEPH SMITH, Jr. – Proprietor (Founder) of the Mormon Church

Joseph Smith on Men on the Moon:
There are Men on the moon who dress like Quakers and live to be nearly 1000 years old. We have little doubt that Joseph Smith felt quite comfortable about making this propecy in the 1800s. How could he ever imagine man would one day walk the surface of the Moon. We wonder why God didn’t tell him before.

(The Young Woman’s Journal, Vol. 3, pages 263-264. See reprint in Mormonism — Shadow or Reality? by Jerald and Sandra Tanner, page 4.)

Joseph Smith said the Book of Mormon is the most correct book ever written:
“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

(History of the Church, Vol. 4, page 461)

Joseph Smith boasted that he did more than Jesus to keep a church together:
“God is in the still small voice. In all these affidavits, indictments, it is all of the devil–all corruption. Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet . . . ”

(History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 408-409).

Joseph Smith made a false prophecy (one of several).
“. . .I prophesy in the name of the Lord God of Israel, unless the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri and punish the crimes committed by her officers that in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted, and there will not be so much as a potsherd left . . . ”

(History of the Church, Vol. 5, p. 394.)

Joseph Smith said Women will be Eternally Pregnant – Ladies: Is this your idea of Good News?
“A question may be asked, ‘Will mothers have their children in eternity?’ Yes! Yes! Mothers, you shall have your children.” (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, page 10). “Eternity is full of thrones, upon which dwell thousands of children reigning on thrones of glory, with not one cubit added to their stature.”

(Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 10).

Joseph Smith said the Gods have Gods and Fathers and Mothers who are Gods, and…
But Mormons aren’t polytheists
“Hence, the doctrine of a plurality of Gods is as prominent in the Bible as any other doctrine. It is all over the face of the Bible . . . Paul says there are Gods many and Lords many . . . but to us there is but one God–that is pertaining to us; and he is in all and through all” (History of the Church, Vol. 6, page 474). “In the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods; and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people it.”

(Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 5).

Joseph Smith Disputes the Christian View of the Trinity:
“I have always declared God to be a distinct personage, Jesus Christ a separate and distinct personage from God the Father, and the Holy Ghost was a distinct personage and a Spirit: and these three constitute three distinct personages and three Gods.”

(Teachings of Prophet Joseph Smith p. 370).

Joseph Smith Claims God Was Once a Man:
“God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted Man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens…I say, if you were to see him to-day, you would see him like a man in form — like yourselves, in all the person, image, and very form as a man….it is necessary that we should understand the character and being of God, and how he came to be so; for I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity,  I will refute that idea, and will take away and do away the veil, so that you may see….and that he was once a man like us; yea, that God himself the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth the same as Jesus Christ himself did.”

(Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 3).

Jesus teaches let the dead bury the Dead…Joseph Smith teaches SEEK after the Dead:
“The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead”

(Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, page 7).

But here is another point. He had to die. Why? Because we read in the scriptures that the testimony is not of force without the death of the testator-that is, in his particular case, and in the case of Christ.fn It was just as necessary that Hyrum Smith lay down his life a martyr for this cause as a witness for God as it was for Joseph Smith, so the Lord permitted them both to be taken in that way and both sealed their testimony with their blood. Both of them held the keys of the dispensation of the fulness of times jointly, and they will through all the ages of eternity. Then naturally the Council of the Twelve came into its place, and by right Brigham Young became President of the Church.

(Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., edited by Bruce R. McConkie [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1954-1956], 1: 221.)

From Gordon B. Hinckley
President of the Mormon Church
To accommodate this growth we must, of necessity, continue to build houses of worship. We now have, at some stage, 451 meetinghouses of various sizes under construction in many parts of the earth. This tremendous building program is phenomenal. I know of nothing to equal it. Our structures are beautiful. They add to the ambience of any community in which they stand. They are well maintained. We have had long experience in constructing houses of worship, and out of that vast experience we are producing better buildings than have ever previously been constructed in the Church. They combine beauty with great utility. If they look much the same, it is because that is intended. By following tried and tested patterns we save millions of dollars while meeting the needs of our people.

The Book of Mormon was recently included as one of the 20 most influential books ever published in America. We are now joining hands with a commercial publisher to enlarge the distribution of this sacred volume, this second witness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

From Elder Dale E. Miller
Of the Seventy

“Alma found his soul healed through the knowledge that Jesus would come and take away all his sins. As his soul became healed, he found peace within himself. Alma was so captured by the effects of this conversion experience that he repeated the sensations to Helaman: “Yea, I say unto you, my son, that there could be nothing so exquisite and so bitter as were my pains. Yea, and again I say unto you, my son, that on the other hand, there can be nothing so exquisite and sweet as was my joy” (Alma 36:21; emphasis added). He was teaching a pattern to his son of lasting peace and joy, just as Enos’s father had done. There is a pattern here of fathers teaching children about the Atonement and eternal life. It is a pattern for all fathers in our day.”

“C. S. Lewis put it this way: “[God] has infinite attention to spare for each one of us. He does not have to deal with us in the mass. You are as much alone with Him as if you were the only being He had ever created. When Christ died, He died for you individually just as much as if you had been the only man [or woman] in the world” (Mere Christianity [1943], 131). “

From Elder Richard G. Scott
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

“The ability to have an unsettled conscience is a gift of God to help you succeed in this mortal life. It results principally from the influence of the Light of Christ on your mind and heart. The Light of Christ is that divine power or influence that emanates from God through Jesus Christ.2 It gives light and life to all things. It prompts all rational individuals throughout the earth to distinguish truth from error, right from wrong. It activates your conscience.3 Its influence can be weakened through transgression and addiction and restored through proper repentance. The Light of Christ is not a person. It is a power and influence that comes from God and when followed can lead a person to qualify for the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost.4 “

“And now, my son, I have told you this that ye may learn wisdom, that ye may learn . . . that there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ. Behold, he is the life and the light of the world.”10

From Elder Henry B. Eyring
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

I learned about those realities from a wise teacher nearly 25 years ago. I spoke in an ancient theater in Ephesus. Bright sunlight flooded the ground where the Apostle Paul had stood to preach. My topic was Paul, the Apostle called of God.

I tried my best to honor Paul and his office. After the talk, a number of people said kind things. Bothof the living Apostles were generous in their comments. But later, Elder Faust took me aside and, with a smile and with softness in his voice, said, “That was a good talk. But you left out the most important thing you could have said.”

I asked him what that was. Weeks later he consented to tell me. His answer has been teaching me ever since.

He said that I could have told the people that if the Saints who heard Paul had possessed a testimony of the value and the power of the keys he held, perhaps the Apostles would not have had to be taken from the earth.

From Elder Bruce R. McConkie
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Topic: Praying to Jesus

From the transcripts of a devotional speech that Bruce McConkie gave at BYU in March of 1982.  The speech itself is listed in a number of areas for the investigator.  It is in the June 1988 issue of the Ensign, on the BYU website under “speeches of the year” or you can find the speech in its full context on by clicking here:$fn=default.htm

From the Mormon publication Ensign, June 1988, pg. 57 they have a section called “I Have a Question”.  Members can write in asking a question and various leaders of the Church will answer them.  In this particular issue the writer has asked: “In 3 Nephi 19, we read that some Nephites prayed to Jesus. Is it proper to pray to him?”

The Church replied to her by printing the speech by McConkie…

“…Another peril is that those so involved often begin to pray directly to Christ because of some special friendship they feel has been developed. In this connection a current and unwise book, which advocates gaining a special relationship with Jesus, contains this sentence:

Because the Savior is our mediator, our prayers go through Christ to the Father, and the Father answers our prayers through his Son.

This is plain sectarian nonsense. Our prayers are addressed to the Father, and to him only….”

From the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr.

Topic: Blood changes at conversion

There are two places you can find this teaching of Joseph Smith.  The investigator can read it in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pgs. 149-50; or in the book, Straightforward Answers to Tough Gospel Questions, pgs. 184-5.   We have shortened the entire quote by taking out the “filler words” to get to the “meat” of the message.

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 149-50; “This first Comforter… has no other effect than pure intelligence. It is more powerful in expanding the mind… of a man who is of the literal seed of Abraham, than one that is a Gentile…as the Holy Ghost falls upon one of the literal seed of Abraham, it is calm and serene…while the effect of the Holy Ghost upon a Gentile, is to purge out the old blood...”

Topic:  Jesus and Lucifer are brothers

There are countless places throughout the works of LDS doctrines that touch on the subject of Jesus and Lucifer being brothers.  While it is an offensive thought to the Bible believing Christian; this is reality for the members of Mormonism.  We’ve only listed a few examples here and have provided the location of where you can read the various sermons in full.

Bruce McConkie wrote in Mormon Doctrine, pg. 192; “The devil (literally meaning slanderer) is a spirit son of God who was born in the morning of pre-existence. (D. & C. 76:25-26.)

Milton R. Hunter, The Gospel through the Ages, pg. 16 says:  The appointment of Jesus to be the Savior of the world was contested by one of the other sons of God. He was called Lucifer, son of the morning. Haughty, ambitious, and covetous of power and glory, this spirit-brother of Jesus desperately tried to become the Savior of mankind. At the great council he proposed a new plan of salvation, event, the Lord revealed the following to Moses…

President Joseph Young said in Journal of Discourses, vol. 6:208; “Who is it that is at the head of this? It is the Devil, the mighty Lucifer, the great prince of the angels, and the brother of Jesus. He left the province of his Father, and took with him a third part of his Father’s kingdom, and there was no other alternative but to banish him. God would have saved him if he could; but he could not. Lucifer and all his host went away to themselves…”

From: Elder Orson Hyde

Topic:  Jesus was married

In Journal of Discourses 2:210, Orson Hyde said the following:  I discover that some of the Eastern papers represent me as a great blasphemer, because I said, in my lecture on Marriage, at our last Conference, that Jesus Christ was married at Cana of Galilee, that Mary, Martha, and others were his wives, and that he begat children.

All that I have to say in reply to that charge is this—they worship a Savior that is too pure and holy to fulfil the commands of his Father. I worship one that is just pure and holy enough “to fulfil all righteousness;” not only the righteous law of baptism, but the still more righteous and important law “to multiply and replenish the earth.” Startle not at this! for even the Father himself honored that law by coming down to Mary, without a natural body, and begetting a son; and if Jesus begat children, he only “did that which he had seen his Father do.”

Topic:  Man is a god in embryo

The Prophet Spencer W. Kimball said in his book, Miracle of Forgiveness, pg. ix; “The scriptures point clearly to the high purpose of man’s existence… through the modern Prophet Joseph Smith…having learned the drama and purpose of it all…Through him God has abundantly confirmed that man is the supreme creation…that man is the offspring of God; that for man, and man alone, was the earth created… and that, having within him the seeds of godhood and thus being a god in embryo, man has unlimited potential for progress and attainment.”

From: the Prophet Brigham Young

Topic:  Blacks go down to death

Sermon by Brigham Young in Journal of Discourses 11:272 he said; “Why are so many of the inhabitants of the earth cursed with a sin of blackness? It comes in consequence of their fathers rejecting the power of the Holy Priesthood, and the law of God. They will go down to death. And when all the rest of the children have received their blessings in the Holy Priesthood, then that curse will be removed from the seed of Cain, and they will then come up and possess the priesthood, and receive all the blessings which we now are entitled to.

From: Monte Nyman

Topic:  Jesus and Joseph are related

From the book “Great Are the Words of Isaiah, pg. 71, by Monte Nyman, it says; “The stem of Jesse is Christ. The book of Revelation also identifies Jesus as such (see Rev. 5:5;  22:16). The rod is “a servant in the hands of Christ, who is partly a descendant of Jesse as well as of Ephraim” (D&C 113:4). That the servant is Joseph Smith himself seems evident. President Brigham Young taught that Joseph was a “pure Ephraimite,” and this was confirmed by President Joseph Fielding Smith (see DS, 3:253-54, for both statements).”

From: the Prophet Brigham Young

Topic:  Blood atonement

Brigham Young said this in Journal of Discourses 3:247; “You say, “That man ought to die for transgressing the law of God.” Let me suppose a case. Suppose you found your brother in bed with your wife, an put a javelin through both of them, you would be justified, and they would atone for their sins, and be received into the kingdom of God. I would at once do so in such a case; and under such circumstances, I have no wife whom I love so well that I would not put a javelin through her heart, and I would do it with clean hands.

Topic:  Church can do more for Negro

Joseph Fielding Smith said in Answers to Gospel Questions 4:170; “… the Church can do more for the Negro than any other church on the face of the earth. What other church can baptize them by divine authority and confirm them and give them the gift of the Holy Ghost? What other church can promise them with assurance that they can if they are faithful and true before the Lord enter into the celestial kingdom? Not one of them! For other churches do not know anything about the celestial kingdom.”

From: the Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith

Topic:  Holy Ghost not essential to salvation

Joseph Fielding Smith said in Doctrines of Salvation 1:39; “I have never troubled myself about the Holy Ghost whether he will sometime have a body or not because it is not in any way essential to my salvation. He is a member of the Godhead, with great power and authority, with a most wonderful mission which must be performed by a spirit. This has satisfied me without delving into mysteries that would be of no particular benefit.”

From: the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr.

Topic:  Meaning of the word “create”

Joseph Smith said in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 151; “Now, the word create came from the word baurau, which does not mean to create out of nothing; it means to organize; the same as a man would organize materials and build a ship. Hence we infer that God had materials to organize the world out of chaos—chaotic matter, which is element, and in which dwells all the glory. Element had an existence from the time He had… (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 vols. 6:308-9).”

From: the Prophet Brigham Young

Topic:  Adam helped create the earth, Adam is Michael the archangel, the Ancient of Days and our God

From Brigham Young in Journal of Discourses, 1:51 it says; “…When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken—HE is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do.

From: the Prophet Brigham Young

Topic:  Bible is true

Brigham Young said in Journal of Discourses 1:39; “There is not that person on the face of the earth who has had the privilege of learning the Gospel of Jesus Christ from these two books, that can say that one is true, and the other is false. No Latter-day Saint, no man or woman, can say the Book of Mormon is true, and at the same time say that the Bible is untrue. If one be true, both are; and if one be false, both are false.”

From: the Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith

Topic:  Bible is not true

Joseph Fielding Smith says in Doctrines of Salvation 3:191; “We are informed in the Book of Mormon that the Hebrew scriptures went “forth from the Jews in purity unto the Gentiles, according to the truth which is in God,” and after they went forth from the Jews many changes were made, and “many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away.

Also see 1 Nephi 13:23-32 which says the fullness of the gospel has been lost through the translation process.

Topic:  Darkness on the earth for three days at crucifixion

3 Nephi 8:23 says; “And it came to pass that it did last for the space of three days that there was no light seen; and there was great mourning and howling and weeping among all the people continually; yea, great were the groanings of the people, because of the darkness and the great destruction which had come upon them.”

The Bible says darkness lasted three hours – Matthew 27:45 says; “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.”

From: the Prophet Joseph Smith

Topic:  Joseph is god to the people

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 363 quote Joseph Smith as follows; “I shall leave my brethren to enlarge on this subject; it is my duty to teach the doctrine. I would teach it more fully—the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. God is not willing to let me gratify you; but I must teach the Elders, and they should teach you. God made Aaron to be the mouthpiece for the children of Israel, and He will make me be god to you in His stead, and the Elders to be mouth for me; and if you don’t like it, you must lump it.”

Topic:  Holy Ghost waiting for a body

Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith’s Teachings, “But the Holy Ghost is yet a spiritual body and waiting to take to himself a body, as the Savior did or as God did or the gods before them took bodies; for the Savior says the work that my Father did do I also. . . . He took himself a body and then laid down his life that he might take it up again. (Joseph Smith, The Words of Joseph Smith, p. 382; standardized).

Topic:  Law of Eternal Progression

Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith’s Teachings says this under the entry of Jesus; “What did Jesus do? Why, I do the things I saw my Father do when worlds came rolling into existence. My Father worked out His kingdom with fear and trembling, and I must do the same; and when I get my kingdom, I shall present it to My Father, so that He may obtain kingdom upon kingdom, and it will exalt Him in glory. He will then take a higher exaltation, and I will take His place, and thereby become exalted myself.

Topic:  Church Stands or Falls with Joseph Smith

Doctrines of Salvation, 1:188 it says; “Mormonism, as it is called, must stand or fall on the story of Joseph Smith. He was either a prophet of God, divinely called, properly appointed and commissioned, or he was one of the biggest frauds this world has ever seen. There is no middle ground.

From: The History of the Church

Topic:  Book of Mormon Most Correct Book

History of the Church 4:461; “I spent the day in the council with the Twelve Apostles at the house of President Young, conversing with them upon a variety of subjects. Brother Joseph Fielding was present, having been absent four years on a mission to England. I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

From: the Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith

Topic:  Motherhood Brings Salvation

Motherhood lies at the foundation of happiness in the home…God has laid upon men and women very sacred obligations with respect to motherhood… In I Timothy 2:13-15, we are told that “Adam was first formed, then Eve…Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.” Can she be saved without child-bearing? She indeed takes an awful risk if she wilfully disregards what is a pronounced requirement of God…”

Gospel Doctrine: Selections from the Sermons and Writings of Joseph F. Smith, pg. 288.

From: James Talmage

Topic:  Salvation Through Obedience

From the Articles of Faith, pg. 422, by James Talmage; “Salvation is attainable only through compliance with the laws and ordinances of the Gospel; and all who are thus saved become sons and daughters unto God in a distinctive sense. In a revelation given through Joseph the Prophet to Emma Smith the Lord Jesus addressed the woman as “My daughter,” and said: “for verily I say unto you, all those who receive my gospel are sons and daughters in my kingdom” (D&C 25:1).”

From: Joseph Fielding McConkie

Topic:  Joseph Smith a Mason

In Answers: Straightforward Answers to Tough Gospel Questions, pg. 48-9 it says;

Joseph Smith and many of the leading brethren of that day were Masons. The question implies that there is something secret or sinister in their Masonic affiliation. This was hardly the case…Many of the leaders of the Church were involved in the Masonic lodge in Nauvoo, among them those with whom he worked most closely and who were destined to be his successors in leading the Church.” – Joseph Fielding McConkie

From: the Prophet Brigham young

Topic:  When Baby Kicks, Spirit Enters the Body

Brigham Young said this in Journal of Discourses 18:258-9: “When the body is prepared, at the proper time, the spirit enters the tabernacle, and all the world of mankind in their reflections and researches must come to this conclusion, for the fact is they can come to no other—that when the mother feels life there is an evidence that the spirit from heaven has entered the tabernacle.”

From: the Prophet Joseph Smith

Topic:  Spirit of Man Not Created

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 158 says; “The spirit of man is not a created being; it existed from eternity, and will exist to eternity. Anything created cannot be eternal; and earth, water, etc., had their existence in an elementary state, from eternity.”

From: B. H. Roberts

Topic:  Sex is Exaltation

B.H. Roberts in New Witnesses For God, pg. 461-2 said; “What a revelation is here! As I have remarked elsewhere, instead of the God-given power of pro-creation being one of the chief things that is to pass away, it is one of the chief means of man’s exaltation and glory in that great eternity, which like an endless vista stretches out before him! Instead of the commandment, “Be fruitful, and multiply and replenish the earth,” being an unrighteous law, it is one by means of which the race of the Gods is perpetuated…”

From: John Widstoe

Topic:  No Hell in Mormonism

In John Widstoe’s Book, Joseph Smith – Seeker After Truth, Prophet of God, pg. 178 it says; “In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is no hell. All will find a measure of salvation; all must pay for any infringement of the law; but the payment will be as the Lord may decide. There is graded salvation. This may be a more terrible punishment: to feel that because of sin a man is here, when by a correct life, he might be higher. The gospel of Jesus Christ has no hell in the old proverbial sense.”
