Mormon Terminology: Blasphemy

11 July

Mormon Doctrine, p. 65“Among a great host of impious and sacrilegious speaking that constitute blasphemy are such things as: Taking the name of God in vain; evil-speaking about the Lord’s anointed; belittling sacred temple ordinances, or patriarchal blessings, or sacramental administrations; claiming unwarranted divine authority; and promulgating with profane piety a false system of salvation.” – Bruce R. McConkie

Matthew 12:31 “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.”

As you can see in the references above, the Mormon definition for blasphemy is much broader than the Lord’s. The transliteration for blasphemy is blasphēmia, which means to speak evil against God.

Here’s what Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance says –

‘G988, from <G989> (blasphemos); vilification (especially against God), blasphemy, evil speaking, railing’

It’s noteworthy to see how Jesus said all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven except for blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. Their list of made-up rules is what keeps Mormons in a state of self imposed worry they’re doing something wrong. Ironically, it looks like McConkie’s last definition makes Smith culpable of blasphemy!

Do ask your Mormon friends/loved ones what they think!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
