Mormon E-mails for November 2013

25 November

mailbag1Here are the latest e-mails from Mormons who write to us!  We’re posting these so you can come alongside us and pray for them as well.  They’ve all come in via the site and blog.

Above all else please know we’re not here to bash the Mormon people or to ridicule them. Our hearts are broken that they believe the lies of the evil one and pray daily they come to know the real Jesus!

Thanks for praying!

From: Chris

It’s always nice to see the Destroyer giving mankind their 2 options once again; either God goofed, or Old Joe Smith Goofed. Well who is going to choose that God goofed, so therefore old Joe must be a false Prophet. You guys are a bunch of idiots.

Chris was responding to our article on the BoM quotes and coincidences. The article and link is listed below as well as our response to him.

Book of Mormon, Writing on the Wall and Aminadi – Mormon Quotes

Alma 10:2; “…and it was the same Aminadi who interpreted the writing which was upon the wall of the temple, which was written by the finger of God.”

Daniel 5:13-16; “Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?  I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee. 15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing: 16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

Again, another similar story from the Bible…

Chris –

Why are we a “bunch of idiots”?
What part of our statement was wrong or worthy of putting us into an idiot status?
Why is it wrong to point out the story in the Book of Mormon is similar to the biblical account that we read of in Daniel?
Don’t you ever find it “odd” there are so many stories in the BoM that resemble the Bible?
What are your thoughts about the coincidences in the BoM – coincidences like the city of Moroni on the Island of Camorah or the letters of George Washington that were word for word also in the BoM or what about king Benjamin who had the same experience Smith’s family saw and lived through with the Christian revivals in early America?
It seems that maybe one or two things might be a coincidence, but with Smith and the BoM there are countless examples! How could that be?
Coincidences in Mormonism
We’re praying for you Chris and hope to hear from you soon.

From: Anders

Why don’t we be Christian about this? Mormons are doing their best to follow Jesus just as we are, they simply believe different things about his mission and purpose. This article shallowly assumes that they avoid the cross because they don’t appreciate Christ’s Atonement. I have many Mormon friends and I have been to their church, and this article drastically misrepresents their views. Mormons prefer to focus on the Living Christ instead of the symbol of his death, but that’s not to say that His Atonement is not a central tenant to their religion.

Anders was responding to our article about the Passion of the Christ and the Missing Cross in Mormonism. You can read the article here

Our response:

Anders –

This isn’t about who works harder at following Jesus! This is about which Jesus they’re following.  The Jesus of Mormonism is far different than the Jesus of Christianity – even Hinckley stated as much in 1998.

The vocabulary you’re choosing to use leads me to believe that you’re LDS – therefore I’m letting you know the atonement of the Mormon Jesus isn’t anything remotely close to what the Bible says.

The Mormon Jesus paid for some of man’s sins in the Garden of Gethsemane. They get this from a misinterpretation of Luke 22:44.

The Jesus of Christianity and the Bible didn’t pay for sins in the Garden of Gethsemane. He paid for them on the cross, thus the topic of the article.

So i ask you Anders, what is it that we’ve misrepresented?

Know that we’re praying for you!

From Harlan –

How many evangelicals are active? How about Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, etc…? None of them know. None of them keep track. But the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints DOES keep track, precisely, week after week, month after month year after year. This is a non-issue. Sorry…!

Harlan was responding to our article on the retention and activity rates in the Mormon Church. You can read the article here.

Our response:

The thing is Harlan Christian churches don’t keep track of its members like the Mormon Church keeps track of theirs. For instance in most cases (I can’t speak for all) the pastor has no idea who’s giving and who’s not, further more they don’t know how much is being given by each individual.

Unlike in the Mormon Church where the Bishop is well aware of who’s giving and how much they’ve given. Christians doing have to go to “Tithing Settlement” and settle up their debt to the church at the end of the year the way Mormons do if they’re not full tithe payers.

In the Christian church pastors don’t mark off who shares their testimony with the congregation, unlike in the Mormon Church where your name is marked off if you stand and bare your testimony the first Sunday of every month.

I could go on and on stating the ways the Mormon Church likes to keep taps on its member to the point where people could feel like they’re married to a jealous spouse than a member of a church.

When you get down to it the Mormon Church wants you to live for them, while the Christian Church wants you to live for Jesus.- Melissa Grimes

From Anonymous –

your entire argument is based on opinion in this article. There is what President Young said, than your opinion. This site and information is a joke.

Anonymous was responding to our article about Brigham Young’s sermon when he told people his words are scripture. We’ve listed the article and link below with our response.

Brigham’s Words are Scripture

Journal of Discourses 13:95; “I know just as well what to teach this people and just what to say to them and what to do in order to bring them into the celestial kingdom…I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture. Let me have the privilege of correcting a sermon, and it is as good Scripture as they deserve. The people have the oracles of God continually.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, January 2, 1870

1 Timothy 4:1-2; “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.”

I believe Young knew he was lying to the people and purposefully led many astray. There is no Celestial Kingdom, no families are forever, and definitely not a plan of salvation that includes men becoming gods.

Anonymous –

What’s so funny about Brigham Young saying that his words are scripture? They’re not scripture today because the Church has denounced many of his teachings, i.e. the Adam-God theory to name just one.

These things aren’t my opinion – they really happened.  Brigham also said that he didn’t believe in the silly stories from the Bible that his mother told him as a child because they had nothing to do with what really happened.

My opinion that he did these things on purpose isn’t really an opinion as it’s been shown that he did in fact lead people away from the Jesus of the Bible. The Jesus of the Bible isn’t a created being. He’s not a polygamist. He didn’t appear to Joseph Smith…

If there’s something inaccurate on our site please let me know and I’ll correct it. Showing side by side comparisons of the Church’s prophecies and teachings with the Bible isn’t my opinion – those are factual texts with relevant information Christians need to know about – but especially the Mormons.

Know that we’re praying for you and hope to hear from you soon.

Michelle
