Mormon E-mails and Lies They Tell

27 June

Galatians 4:16; “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?”

mailbagToday we’re looking at an e-mail we received a couple of days ago. The young man’s note sounds like many of the other Mormon e-mails we’ve received in the past.

Our first question to the young man is also the same question we ask every time we get something like this:

Why do you feel the need to lie?

I’ve been in ministry since 1994 and have seen my fair share of letters and e-mails from the Mormon community. While I may not know the exact number of times I’ve received this type of letter, I do know when they deny being Mormon, 100% of the time they end up confessing they are. This letter could serve as the poster child on  how they lie when writing in to us.

Before we begin, I want it understood we’re asking Christians to pray for this young man! I’m not here to bash or malign the Church, or the Mormon people. I wouldn’t still be doing this if that was the case! Just pray for ‘Jacob’. Thanks! My response is listed after his note –

Hey,

My name is Jacob.  I saw your site is pretty critical of Joseph Smith Junior.  I am curious, what is so wrong with the Scriptures he was given?  You can’t look at the Journal of Discourses or any other doctrines of man, but the Scripture books he was given are very profound and I doubt they were authored by man.  I’m only saying this because I don’t want you to get into trouble; it’s one thing to diss the religious side of LDS, but the books that testify of Jesus Christ are actually pretty good, as I have read all of them, and I am not associated with any religion or denomination.

Peace,

Jacob

Dear Jacob –

Hello, thanks for writing to us here at Life After Ministries. We wanted to let you know we’re praying for you, and hope to hear back from you soon!

I want to be sure I address each of your questions/comments so here we go. My response to each of your questions is in red font –

‘I am curious, what is so wrong with the Scriptures he was given?’

The ‘scriptures’ Joseph Smith presented to the world wasn’t given to him by the God of the Bible. We know this based on several reasons, but to narrow those down, the first clue is found in the number of changes made to its content (the Book of Mormon).

The second clue is found in the Book of Abraham. Abraham’s name isn’t found in any of the original papyri, but Smith claimed it’s all about Abraham. As it turned out, these are actually common funerary writings for the Egyptian god ‘Hor’, and an Egyptian man by the name of She`shonk. This means the content of the papyri is made up of instructions on how to mummify dead people, the names of the trinkets they were buried with, and the spiritual meanings of each.

The third clue is found in the Book of Moses which is actually Smith’s attempt at rewriting the first six chapters of Genesis. This too is filled with contradictions, and not to mention the Bible explicitly tells us not to rewrite God’s word, but Joseph took no heed to that.

And last but not least, the Doctrine and Covenants is a book of prophecies made by Smith, and other prophets of the Church. These prophecies have been historically proven to be false prophecies. It should also be pointed out they too, have been changed.

‘You can’t look at the Journal of Discourses or any other doctrines of man, but the Scripture books he was given are very profound and I doubt they were authored by man.’

Jacob, are you aware the Church considers the Journal of Discourses to be scripture? When they were originally given as sermons, the Church printed them out and told members they were as good as the written word.

The Ensign Magazine took the place of the Journal of Discourses, and again Mormons were told to keep them on their nightstands to study each night. Words from the prophets aren’t considered teachings of men, they consider them to be coming from God Himself.

‘I’m only saying this because I don’t want you to get into trouble’

Tell me Jacob, how would I get into trouble?

Two important lessons can be found in the Bible.

1.God tells us the Bereans searched the scriptures daily to see if the  things they were taught were true – Acts 17:11

2.Paul told us that scripture was given to edify, instruct, for reproof, and to study – 2 Timothy 3:16

If I’m using the Lord’s blueprint, and instructions on how to study scripture, why would this be bad for me?

‘it’s one thing to diss the religious side of LDS…’

Where have I dissed the Church?

‘the books that testify of Jesus Christ are actually pretty good, as I have read all of them, and I am not associated with any religion or denomination.’

The Jesus of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith’s testimony in the Pearl of Great Price is not the Jesus of the Bible Jacob.

The Jesus of the Bible is God incarnate, and Joseph Smith claimed this was a lie.

I find it really hard to believe you’re not affiliated with any denomination, aka Mormonism.

You would be the very first person who’s said the things you have, and not be a Mormon. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years, and the story is always the same. My questions to your comment are:

Why do you feel it necessary to lie about who you are?

Will the Mormon god honor you for denying him?

We’re praying for you Jacob, as well as all Mormon people and hope to hear back from you!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
