Law of Moses and Salvation through Christ

Alma 25:16;Now they did not suppose that salvation came by the law of Moses; but the law of Moses did serve to strengthen their faith in Christ; and thus they did retain a hope through faith, unto eternal salvation, relying upon the spirit of prophecy, which spake of those things to come.” – BC 90

John 5:39-40; Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.  40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

How do you strengthen the Law of Moses through faith in Christ when it’s 90 BC?

    Huh?

Alma is saying that their faith in Christ was strengthened by the Law of Moses, not the other way around, as is being portrayed here.

How is this possible? Simple. The coming of Christ was known to all the faithful from the time of Adam. All the great patriarchs believed in and looked forward to his coming and atonement.

The idea that since the time was before his birth no one knew of his coming and his atoning sacrifice is crazy.

I may be going out on a limb here, but perhaps since it was 90 BC and Alma was of Hebrew lineage (?) and the North Americans didn’t have the Greek language… wouldn’t it have been translated; “Messiah” instead of “Christ”? Or “Holy One of Israel”? Or “Deliverer”?

Except that the language it was being translated into (that of English) had adopted the title Christ in preference to the any of the other titles, so when translating the record into English it would make more sense to use the preferred term.

However, this doesn’t really address the issue at hand. The question asked at the end of the blog is how does faith in Christ strengthen the Law of Moses, though I am assuming that was an error in wording, as such a question makes no sense given the scriptures quoted.
Going off what I assume to be the question (how does the Law of Moses strengthen faith in Christ when it was 90 BC?) I was simply asking how it makes sense to say that suggest that it couldn’t.

Note: If they had Greek using the term Christ would not be an actual translation.
