Traditions of Men vs Commandment of God

“The Importance of the Family,” Ensign, May 2003, 42; “The Church has established two special times for families to be together. The first is centered around the proper observance of the Sabbath day. This is the time we are to attend our regular meetings together, study the life and teachings of the Savior and of the prophets. ‘Other appropriate Sunday activities include (1) writing personal and family journals, (2) holding family councils, (3) establishing and maintaining family organizations for the immediate and extended family, (4) personal interviews between parents and children, (5) writing to relatives and missionaries, (6) genealogy, (7) visiting relatives and those who are ill or lonely, (8) missionary work, (9) reading stories to children, and (10) singing Church hymns.’

“The second time is Monday night. We are to teach our children in a well-organized, regular family home evening. No other activities should involve our family members on Monday night. This designated time is to be with our families.” – L. Tom Perry

Mark 7:7-9; “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.”

How many family home evenings are enough? What if you get to heaven and you’re found guilty because you should’ve had one or two more FHEs???  (FHE: family home evening) What then?

And what if you didn’t hold enough family council meetings, sing just the right church hymn or write to the missionary? Will you lose your salvation?

What happens if you didn’t think to do the genealogy work for Aunt Matilda? Are you damned for that and is Matilda damned because some paperwork wasn’t filled out?

Come on people – Jesus came into the world not to condemn, but to save – John 3:17! Jesus fulfilled the Law so that we can be released from it – Romans 7:6. Don’t fall into the traditions of genealogy which to God is useless – 1 Timothy 1:4. He already knows who you’re related to and their day of salvation is over with.
