Earth has a Spirit

Journal of Discourses 5:172; “Some say the earth exists without spirit; I do not believe any such thing; it has a spirit as much as anybody has a spirit.” – Apostle Heber C. Kimball, Salt Lake City, August 23, 1857

Jeremiah 2:26-28; “As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, 27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us. 28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.”

I have searched and searched the Bible looking for anything that remotely suggests the earth has a soul or spirit. I also searched for anything in the Bible that spoke of people who believe this.

The only people I’ve heard of that believes the earth has a spirit or soul in today’s age are Pantheists, Witches and Mormons.

In the Bible God clearly condemns worshipping the earth and things of the earth that He has created. To worship these things you obviously believe they have worth or spiritual power. God says they do not.

Israel and Judah were prime examples in Isaiah and into Jeremiah’s day of how badly things can go when we take our eyes off God. The Lord referred to His people as faithless Israel who played the part of a harlot and Judah as treacherous (Jeremiah 3:6) for believing the earth had powers or abilities it clearly does not possess.

Looking closely at the verses from chapter two in Jeremiah we can see that even back then they were practicing a form of evolution that predominates our culture today.  Mormonism has fallen prey to the lies of Satan just as Israel and Judah did back then.
