Birth of Baptism

Ensign, Feb 1994; “Through the birth known as baptism, we are cleansed from sin and we become part of a new family — the family of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

– “The Birth That Is Baptism”

John 3:5; “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

Yep, we need to be baptized and we also need to take communion. Those are the two ordinances Jesus directed us to participate in.

Now, as for the rest of this stuff…

I strongly beg to differ with the statement that water baptism cleanses us from sin. We can argue this as Christians till the cows come home, but the point I want to make with this Mormon statement is how the Church will point to anything in the Bible, Ensign, Book of Mormon, et al, to show those ordinances take away sin.

They’ll point to anything but the blood of Christ.

Point two – we do not become part of a new family in Mormonism. When we accept that God sent His Son to die for us on the cross we are reconciled to God and become adopted children. It’s at that time we are saved and the Holy Spirit comes to reside inside us.

Point three – baptism is an outward expression of our inner decision to follow Jesus.
