Adoration for Deity not Needed

The Best of Lowell L. Bennion, Selected Writings 1928-1988: pg. 79; Christ was as humane and man-centered as any humanist in his concern for persons, but he also loved God and shared with him his love for man.  And so my loyalty to persons includes man, every man, I hope, but also Deity—the Father and the Son. They too are persons. I don’t know that they need my direct adoration and affection, but it is my simple faith that they suffer when men suffer and rejoice when men have cause to rejoice. So in a modest way, but with all my heart, I would diminish their suffering and enhance their joy.

Psalm 95:3-6; For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.  4 In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.  5 The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.  6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.

Okay….

So when was the last time you went along in your day and said; “Oh how I love the Deity but to adore the Deity – nah…”?

First of all Jesus told us the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind”. – Matt. 22:37

Matthew Henry described the love we have for God which God indeed commanded us to have for Him is the intense degree of love. It’s the type of love that causes us to fall on our face and to adore Him who is our Creator.

Notice the sequence of events in the passage of when Jesus answered the question of the attorney who was also a Pharisee. He told him the two greatest laws of God are these – to love the Lord your God with all your heart…and then He told him to love your neighbor as yourself. This would naturally mean God comes before all others. He comes before your kids, your spouse, your friends and even yourself.

Secondly, God is not a person! John 4:24, Numbers 23:19, Hosea 11:9, John 1:18, Isaiah 43:10-11, Mal. 3:6 and on my list (yours too) could go.

If I can’t humble myself to adore God then I am in trouble. May God have mercy on this people!
