LDS Missionary’s Words are Scripture

08 February

“Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain:  they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:16

Today we’re looking at another revelation claim made by Joseph Smith in 1831. This revelation was originally meant for Orson Hyde, Luke S. Johnson, Lyman E. Johnson, and William E. McLellin. Smith ‘expanded’ its meaning before it was eventually canonized in 1835.

Doctrine and Covenants 68: Intro, 2-4 “…1–5, The words of the elders when moved upon by the Holy Ghost are scripture…And, behold, and lo, this is an ensample unto all those who were ordained unto this priesthood, whose mission is appointed unto them to go forth— 3 And this is the ensample unto them, that they shall speak as they are moved upon by the Holy Ghost. 4 And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation.” — Joseph Smith, Hiram, Ohio, November 1, 1831

2 Peter 3:2 “That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour”.

Our questions today ~

Why did Smith expand the  prophecy?

Where in Scripture has our Lord ever done such a thing?

Does the same rule, ‘words of the missionaries are scripture’, apply today?

Since this is canonized, and authoritative, what does it mean for the average Mormon like my mother?

How does this help Mormons in their daily walk with Jesus?

Inserting a random phrase from God’s word (‘the power of God unto salvation’ Romans 1:16) serves only one purpose. That purpose is to confuse members when they come across this passage in their Bibles.

Smith mixed biblical language in with his modern vernacular to compile the Doctrine and Covenants. It’s the same trick he used when compiling the Book of Mormon.

Why would he lift a random phrase from God’s word if he didn’t believe the Bible had been translated correctly?

Oh beloved, this is a trick from the evil one! God would never plagiarize Himself, much less change His own rules while doing so!

Pray for Mormons to see through the charade and open their Bibles to the true gospel our Lord has supplied!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
