LDS Leaders’ Contradictions: Why aren’t Sermons Canonized?

02 May

2 Peter 1:20-21 “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

Peppered throughout the voluminous works of Mormonism are oft used reminders to members their leaders are the ‘living oracles’ of God. These self proclamations are slathered with warnings not to stray from what God ‘hath said’, and the Church is the only repository for info on salvation.

When Mormon Leaders Speak…It’s Inspired Scripture

One such example comes from George Q. Cannon, stating the Journal of Discourses are filled with the ‘testimony to the immutable principles of salvation’. How  could they be immutable if they were outlawed…? You can find similar references in their canon, and at their bi-annual conferences.

Without a doubt, Church leaders have unequivocally declared the words they speak at General Conference are scripture as well. This is clarified in the 2011 revision of a heavily used teaching manual that reiterates the important role church leaders have in fulfilling scripture. In open defiance, they proclaim a role God has forbidden them to take.

“In the language of the revelation they, the Presidency, are constituted ‘a quorum . . . to receive the oracles for the whole Church” [D&C 124:126]. They are the supreme court here on earth in the interpretation of God’s law.” [emp. theirs] Teachings of the Living Prophets Student Manual Religion 333, p. 45

Word for word, this manual ranks up there with the Journal of Discourses in the amount of most damning content. Our main concern with their use of this resource is the intended audience; the Mormon Youth Group.

By virtue of common sense, no Christian group or leader, would ever divert your attention away from Jesus!

Please, don’t forget to pray for everyone involved! We’re not posting this to be sensationalistic, the Church does that all on its own. We do this to inform, and hopefully assist in opening the eyes of the Mormon people!

Below is a list of claims made by LDS leadership concerning the role they think they’re fulfilling in ‘helping God’. While we’ve limited ourselves to just one Journal of Discourses reference, you should know the intros for each Journal contain the same verbiage. For more info see Mormonism’s Love-Hate Relationship with the Journal of Discourses.

In closing, we must ask:

If what LDS leaders say is true, why don’t they canonize everything?

Doctrine and Covenants 21:4-5; “…thou shalt give heed unto all his words… 5 For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth…”

Doctrine and Covenants 68:3-4; “…they shall speak as they are moved upon by the Holy Ghost. 4 And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture…”

Journal of Discourses 13:95; “I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, February 2, 1870

Whatever the First Presidency Says is Scripture

Religion 333 Student Manual, p. 43; ‘Introduction. …upon them [the First Presidency] rests the responsibility of directing the kingdom of God on the earth …Chapter 4 Overview…

…10. What the First Presidency says is scripture.”

Religion 333 Student Manual, p, 52; “What the First Presidency Says Is Scripture • President Marion G. Romney (1897–1988) of the First Presidency taught that the First Presidency speaks the words Jesus Christ would declare if He were here in person…”

Religion 333 Student Manual, p. 53; “So I repeat again, what the presidency say as a presidency is what the Lord would say if he were here, and it is scripture. It should be studied, understood, and followed, even as the revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants and other scripture.’” – Marion Romney [all emp. mine]
