LDS: Bible Prophecies of Book of Mormon

29 June

Journal of Discourses 2:285 “The Latter-day Saints that are now sitting before me, and those who inhabit this Territory, are here in fulfillment of prophecy. We inhabit these mountains because the ancient Prophets have predicted that such an event should take place, and we are fulfilling their predictions in this respect.

We believe in that sacred record called the Book of Mormon. Why? Because the ancient Prophets have predicted that such a book should be revealed in the latter times; and it has come… and we are the very people that are enjoying the fulfillment of those predictions.” – Orson Pratt, Great Salt Lake City, January 7, 1855

Deuteronomy 13:1-4 “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,  2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3 thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.”

Mr. Pratt created the lies above to bolster false hope the Church doled to an unsuspecting group of people. Consider for a moment the amount of time and effort it took to get to the Wasatch Front. When you type distance from Iowa to Utah into your search engine, the first thing that comes up tells you it’s 1,387 miles apart.

If you were living in the mid 19th century, it was no small feat getting there in your covered wagon, so hearing Mr. Pratt’s sermon must have given the audience a sense of relief they’d done the right thing.

The problem, of course, is that it wasn’t true. Here’s a few reasons why –

1.Mormons aren’t the fulfillment of biblical prophecy because Isaiah was foretelling what was going to take place with the nation of Israel, not Mormonism.

2.The ‘ancient prophets’ like Isaiah were prophesying of their immediate future, and that of what would take place concerning the fall of Babylon.

3.The BoM is not predicted in the Bible at all. When Isaiah spoke of a voice whispering from the dust, he was warning fellow Israelites to stop practicing necromancy by trusting lies of the false teachers (witches, and fortune-tellers).

Mormon leaders today are still relying on this passage in Isaiah 29 to have the same effect Pratt was hoping for 163 years ago. The only biblical prophecy Mormons have fulfilled is being part of the many who would believe false teachers because they have ‘itching ears’.

2 Timothy 4:3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears”.

If they’re going to rely on the Bible at all they should take heed of Moses’ warning not to traipse after gods they don’t know.

With Love in Christ;
