LDS APOSTLE: TRUTH DESTROYS

31 August

“On Being a Mormon Historian (and Its Aftermath),” in George D. Smith, ed., Faithful History: Essays on Writing Mormon History, 1992, p. 76“When Elder Packer interviewed me as a prospective member of Brigham Young University’s faculty in 1976, he explained: ‘I have a hard time with historians because they idolize the truth. The truth is not uplifting; it destroys. I could tell most of the secretaries in the church office building because that they are ugly and fat. That would be the truth, but it would hurt and destroy them. Historians should tell only that part of the truth that is inspiring and uplifting.’” –– D. Michael Quinn
John 3:21 “But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

The word truth is in the Bible 222 times. Our Lord obviously thought it was such an important subject that Jesus even reminded His disciples those who love evil, hate the light.

What plainer picture could He paint warning us of danger, and whom to avoid? Mr. Packer’s words made him a walking danger for all involved.

Moreover, what true man of God would say such a thing about others?

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
