LDS: Anti-Polygamy Laws Unconstitutional

09 June

Journal of Discourses 14:267 “It is the violation of the natural rights of man that has deluged the earth with blood in all ages. These principles were enunciated also by Joseph Smith, he believed in them, so do we, in the right to think, in the right to speak, in the right to act, in the right to do all things that are right and good and proper, but not in the right to interfere with any other man’s rights, any other man’s religion, any other man’s principles. These are our views. God has planted them in our bosom, they will remain there eternally, for they are principles that dwell in the bosom of God.” — John Taylor, Salt Lake City, December 17, 1871

1 Timothy 3:2 “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach”.

Mr. Taylor, of course, was speaking about polygamy. Nine years prior to this speech, President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act into law, making polygamy illegal. The Church was well aware the feds in DC weren’t about to let this topic go away quietly.

Trying to drum up support of church members, Taylor and other LDS General Authorities, stretched the meaning of the US Constitution to new heights. While campaigning for a new meaning of what the law actually says, the Church totally ignored their own self-imposed standards.

Articles of Faith 1:12 “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.”

In essence, there are three topics to consider with our LDS reference today.

1.The Church totally ignored what the Bible has always said. One man + one woman = one marriage.

2.The Church totally abandoned their own principles.

3.They were advocating polygamous lifestyles when the laws of the land strictly forbade it.

Is this the type of god that’s worthy of your worship? We pray Mormons of today will see what their leaders have done. If they couldn’t tell the truth then, why would they tell the truth now?

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
