Last Words of 3 Prophets at General Conferences

05 April

salt-lake-temple-2The other day we looked at Brigham Young’s last words, and it got me to thinking…scary I know!

What would be the lasting impression people would have of you after you’re gone? With General Conference wrapping up as I type this, I also wondered what some of the LDS prophets said to members at their last General Conference talks.

The overall message from the three men we pulled reports from was anything but uplifting. None of them pointed to Christ Jesus. None of them praised God for His bountiful mercy upon them. Not one of the three told members their salvation was dependent upon God’s Son who was sacrificed for our sins.

Joseph has All Truth, Gods Organized Earth

Joseph Smith

June 16, 1844, Sunday Morning
Meeting in the Grove, Near Nauvoo Temple

The Christian Godhead – Plurality of Gods” (History of the Church 6:476)

“…The head God organized the heavens and the earth. I defy all the world to refute me. In the beginning the heads of the Gods organized the heavens and the earth. … Did I build on any other man’s foundation? I have got all the truth which the Christian world possessed, and an independent revelation in the bargain, and God will bear me off triumphant…”

Note: 11 days later…Smith died in a gun battle June 27, 1844

Knowing Jesus Will Not Save You

Heber J. Grant
April 6, 1945, Friday Morning

General Conference, “The Path of Duty the Path of Safety,” p.9; “There is but one path of safety for the Latter-day Saints, and that is the path of duty. It is not a testimony only; it is not marvelous manifestations; it is not knowing that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, that it is the plan of salvation-it is not actually knowing that the Savior is the Redeemer, and that Joseph Smith was his prophet, that will save you and me; but it is the keeping of the commandments of God, living the life of a Latter-day Saint.”

No Other Time in History Except With Joseph Smith…

Gordon B. Hinckley
October 7, 2007, Sunday Morning

General Conference, “The Stone Cut Out of the Mountain,” p.89; “Joseph, when he was 14 years of age, had an experience in that glorious First Vision that was different from any other recorded experience of any man.

At no other time of which we have any record have God our Eternal Father and His Beloved Son, the risen Lord, appeared on earth together.
At the time of the baptism of Jesus by John in the river Jordan, the voice of God was heard, but He was not seen. At the Mount of Transfiguration, again the voice of God was heard, but there is no record of His appearance. Stephen saw the Lord on the right hand of the Father, but They did not address or instruct him.
Following His Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the Nephites in the Western Hemisphere. The voice of the Almighty was heard three times, introducing the risen Christ, but there was no appearance of the Father.
How truly remarkable was that vision in the year 1820 when Joseph prayed in the woods and there appeared before him both the Father and the Son. One of these spoke to him, calling him by name and, pointing to the other, said, “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Joseph Smith-History 1:17).  Nothing like it had ever happened before…” – [emp. mine]
