Good Friday Silly Custom Not Observed – Mormon Quotes

Answers to Gospel Questions 5:155; Question: “Can you please tell me why members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints do not observe Good Friday as other Christians do?”

Answer: The reason why we do not observe Good Friday should be clear enough.  Easter is taken from a pagan spring holiday, that was governed by the moon. The Roman Catholic Church connected the birth of the Savior with this pagan ceremony. As you know, Easter is governed by the moon, and this spring pagan festival was celebrated according to the moon, any time in March and the end of April.  THE RESURRECTION DATE DID NOT VARY.

Now as you well know that the resurrection did not vary and it is foolish to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord at the end of March or the first of April, or middle of April or near the first of May, and put Good Friday the Friday before the Easter Sunday. I think you are wise enough to see the foolishness of it. The resurrection of the Savior does not vary year by year but it is a constant thing. Why should we follow the silly custom rather than to have one day for the resurrection?

1 Corinthians 1:18-1923-24For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.  But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

It makes my heart sick to read the response given in the LDS reference.  May we always remember to pray diligently for my people and as the song goes, “May we follow God’s own fool, believe the unbelievable, and come be a fool as well…”  (© Michael Card).

Amy Carmichael once said; “If I covet anything but the dust at the foot of the Cross then I know nothing of Calvary Love”.

I am mormon. I celebrate Easter as does my LDS congregation. We do not have a church service on Good Friday but we certainly recognize the importance of the day Christ chose to giver His life to pay the price for our sins. Every “Mormon” believes this truth. We choose to rejoice for the day of resurrection rather than the day of His crucifixion. This is also why Mormons don’t wear crosses. We understand and appreciate His gift of giving His life so we can repent of our sins and be forgiven, But we celebrate His resurrection aND that we can be immortal and return to the arms of our Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It is true we don’t actually believe Easter is the actual day He resurrected, that day would be unchanging, but we celebrate the day as a symbol of the day He rose from the dead.

I’m grateful for my knowledge and faith in Him. Truly, without that knowledge of Jesus Christ life would be impossible to bear. In the bible, Old Testament we were told of His coming, He came in the humblest of circumstances. He grew up knowing who He was. He showed us His perfect example, and included in His short mission the answer to every question I needed answered in my life, the greatest ANSWER is LOVE.

I worship Him, I honor Him, I praise Him, I thank Him with my whole heart. I love celebrating Him with all my brothers and sisters of every faith. HE IS OUR KING, OR REDEEMER, OUR LORD, OUR SAVIOR. AMEN
