Glenn Beck’s Rant on a Christian School

13 May

A few days ago, I came across a video Glenn Beck posted on his Facebook page of him expressing his outrage that his children won’t be allowed to attend a Christian school.

You can watch the video here Facebook.com/GlennBeck/Videos.

There’s a couple things I’d like to address here.

The first being is that maybe this school wanted him to sign an agreement that he and his family agreed with the Trinitarian doctrine, and/or that they believed the Bible to be the only word of God.

Some people might be surprised that Glenn would be shocked when he learned Christians don’t consider Mormons to be members of the body of Christ. The thing is Mormons are surprised by this revelation.

When my boys were young a local church started a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group. One of the Mormon women that I knew wanted to have a role in the leadership of the group, and they said ‘NO’! She was really upset by it, and couldn’t understand why. I’m sure you can imagine the comments about Mormons being persecuted that were made by everyone in the church when they learned of this ‘injustice’.

Another time I wanted to join a Christian home-school group, and was told I had to agree with their statement of faith to attend. The statement of faith said I had to agree the Bible was the only word of God. Of course, as a Mormon I couldn’t agree with it, and felt they were deliberately trying to exclude those who didn’t agree with them. I did end up attending another Christian group, and a couple of them were floored by what I told them Mormons believe. I’m surprised I wasn’t kicked out.

Another thing I’d like to address is that he said he believes he’s saved by grace. One thing you need to understand is that general salvation to a Mormon isn’t getting to live with God for eternity. Salvation is for everyone because remember, there are three different levels of heaven in Mormonism. Then there’s the Outer Darkness which is the Mormon version of Hell.

Outer Darkness – “Latter-day revelation speaks of hell in at least two senses. First, it is the temporary abode in the spirit world for those who were disobedient in mortality. In this sense, hell has an end. The spirits there will be taught the gospel, and sometime following their repentance they will be resurrected to a degree of glory of which they are worthy. Those who will not repent, but are nevertheless not sons of perdition, will remain in hell throughout the Millennium. After these thousand years of torment, they will be resurrected to a Telestial glory” (lds.org)

Mormons believe everyone is saved by grace, which is being saved from spiritual death.

“To be saved—or to gain salvation—means to be saved from physical and spiritual death. Because of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, all people will be resurrected and saved from physical death.” (Elder D. Todd Christofferson, April 2008 General Conference)

Only those who submit to Mormon doctrine, and give 10% of their earnings to the Church, can receive their golden pass to the temple where they can receive their endowments.

“People may also be saved from individual spiritual death through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, by their faith in Him, by living in obedience to the laws and ordinances of His gospel, and by serving Him.” (Elder D. Todd Christofferson April 2008 General Conference) (emphasis mine)

“To be exalted—or to gain exaltation—refers to the highest state of happiness and glory in the celestial realm. These blessings can come to us after we leave this frail and mortal existence. The time to prepare for our eventual salvation and exaltation is now.” (Elder D. Todd Christofferson, April 2008 General Conference)

Only in the highest degree of glory are they allowed to live in the presence of God, before they go on to becoming their own god. You see, exaltation is the name of the game here, godhood, not bowing in God’s presence, and worshipping Him for eternity.

The thing to remember is that Mormons like Glenn Beck will use Christian phrases and vocabulary to “sound Christian” to the unsuspecting public. They use these phrases without a clue as to what they truly mean. If Glenn and other Mormons were truly Christians they would be looking to the cross as the way to God, not their temples.

Furthermore, they wouldn’t be trying to become a god themselves, the thought would never cross their minds if they were truly devoted to following Jesus Christ.

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes
