Girls’ Focus Should be Marriage, not Missionary Work

John 18:11-14; “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

“There is increasing evidence that some young women are being strongly encouraged to serve full-time missions. Though capable and effective, young women do not have the same responsibility to serve full-time missions as do young men who hold the priesthood. We are grateful that some desire to serve as full-time missionaries, but they should not be made to feel obligated to do so. A young woman should not be recommended for a mission if it would interfere with a specific marriage proposal” (Bulletin, 1993, no. 2, p. 2).”

Matthew 22:36-40; “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

If loving the Lord includes serving the Lord, as it does in Mormonism, why pray tell, are they pushing marriage over missions?

And why are Mormon bishops involved?

All missionaries are required to have a bishop’s recommend before they can go on a mission. This in essence, means they’ve been interviewed by their bishop to determine worthiness, and he gives either a yea, or nay.

Why would he be the one to determine if there’s a viable marriage proposal? Shouldn’t this be a private family matter?

In all the interviews I’ve conducted for volunteers to help at the ministry, or serve on missions with me, I have never asked such a thing! I look for pastoral, and other church leaders’ recommendations. I ask for details on why they want to serve, and about their current relationship with Jesus. I just can’t imagine telling someone they can’t go if there’s a shadowy figure waiting in the wings! Oh my….

Lastly, after watching the video on our site yesterday, why is something like that the most important thing a young woman can do?
