Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet – Mormon Quotes

1 – The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.

1 John 2:27; “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Job 32:8; “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.”

2 – The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.

Matthew 24:35; “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Hebrews 2:1-3; “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.  2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.

3 – The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.

Matthew 4:4; “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

4 – The prophet will never lead the church astray.

Psalm 82:5They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.

5 – The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.

2 Thess. 2:3-4; “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

6 – The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.

Ps. 12:1-8; “Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.  2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. 3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: 4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?  5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. 6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.  7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.  8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

7 – The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.

Ezekiel 13:2-3; “Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD; 3 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!

8 – The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.

1 John 4:1; “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

9 – The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.

Deut. 12:29-32; “When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; 30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.  31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.  32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”

10 – The prophet may advise on civic matters.

2 Peter 2:119-20; “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.  19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.  20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

11 – The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.

Acts 17:2;And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures.

12 – The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.

Jude 1:4; “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

13 – The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.

Luke 14:11; “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

14 – The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

John 14:6; “I am the way the truth and the light, no one comes to the Father, except by me”.
