LDS Advice for Sexual Abuse Victims

General Conference, May, 2009; “The victim must do all in his or her power to stop the abuse. Most often, the victim is innocent because of being disabled by fear or the power or authority of the offender. At some point in time, however, the Lord may prompt a victim to recognize a degree of responsibility for abuse. Your priesthood leader will help assess your responsibility so that, if needed, it can be addressed. Otherwise the seeds of guilt will remain and sprout into bitter fruit. Yet no matter what degree of responsibility, from absolutely none to increasing consent, the healing power of the atonement of Jesus Christ can provide a complete cure.” – Apostle Richard G Scott

You know, statements like this apostle’s comment are littered throughout Mormon literature and in reality are just a dime a dozen. The pathetic thing, aside from the fact they shouldn’t say these things, is that they’re still thinking this way in today’s day and age.

Do you really think God is going to wonder why you’re not a virgin???

Don’t you think He’d already know this?

What makes someone think they have the authority or obligation to even say such a thing?

Why is the bishop allowed to assess any culpability on the part of the victim?

The ironic thing about all this is how they say these things without flinching or blinking an eye. It’s like they’re ordering an ice cream.  This is another way for the Church to demean and control the women of the Church.

In Utah the rate of suicide, incest and rape is ALWAYS higher than the national average. You don’t have wonder why when you read comments like this one and take into account the whole polygamy is salvation scenario.

Isaiah 43:1-4; “But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.  2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  3 For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.  4 Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.”

Psalm 147:1-3; “Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. 2 The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel. 3 He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
