Faith, How to Find – Mormon Quotes

Be Your Best Self, pg. 160; How does one find faith? We do not find it by reading about it in a book; we must discover faith for ourselves. President David O. McKay taught: “The greatest battle of life is fought within the silent chambers of your own soul.” It is a good thing for us to sit down and commune with ourselves, to come to an understanding of ourselves and decide in that silent moment what our duty is to family, to church, to country, and to our fellowmen.

Romans 10:14-17How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?  15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!  16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?  17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

In the Mormon Church I had always been taught I was especially good because I was born in the latter days to a Mormon family.  I had held out and waited patiently for my family.  My faith had been great.

My family – have I ever told you about my family?  Oh my goodness!

Seriously I couldn’t figure out why I would’ve chosen that family who fought all the time and only one of my parents was active or why I would’ve sinned against Jesus while I was with Him.  And then reasoning started kicking in after having a bunch of babies…why would I want to be pregnant for eternity and after I began studying I started rethinking the whole gods and goddesses thing.

When I was Mormon there was also a popular saying “quit feeling sorry for yourself”.   Meaning if you began any reasoning process in your mind then you’re feeling sorry for yourself and your circumstances so stop it.

I discovered that my duty wasn’t to family or friends or even my heritage. Those are all noble causes and my dedication to those things is a marker of who I might be but it doesn’t tell the whole truth.

If I’m a Christian my first duty is to Christ Jesus and worshipping Him – my total devotion in life must go to Him otherwise my service to Him will be manifested in a haphazard way to my friends, family and heritage.

Works is a manifestation of the faith inside of me. Those of little faith produce little works – true and lasting works – for Him.
