Crystal Balls aka Peep Stones, and History of Joseph Smith

26 March

Leviticus 19:31; “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”

While looking for a reference on something that has nothing to do with our topic today, I came across Bruce R. McConkie’s definition for ‘crystal balls’. As it turned out, I had also just read a portion of the Church’s Comprehensive History explaining how Smith had used peep stones he put in his hat to translate the Book of Mormon.

Long story short, check out the info I retrieved on our topic today. I have to say that I’ve always found it fascinating the Church never has a problem with providing how they went about tricking people. In many ways, it’s downright scary, and should give members pause as they read their own history.

In 1826 Joseph Smith was arrested for ‘glass-looking’, a form of fortune-telling, and at the time was illegal. For more info, see Joseph Smith’s Witchcraft, Scrying and Arrest 1820 – 1827.

In 1829 Smith and Oliver Cowdery translated the Book of Mormon. The way he did this was noted in the Church’s history –

A Comprehensive History of the Church, Vol. 1, p. 129; “THE MANNER OF TRANSLATING THE BOOK OF MORMON … The Seer Stone referred to here was a chocolate-colored, somewhat egg-shaped stone which the Prophet found while digging a well….”

As a Mormon I never thought twice about Smith’s activities, or the tools he used to write the Book of Mormon. Little did I know there was such a thing as ‘Mormon Doctrine’, written by one of the apostles…

Mormon Doctrine, p. 162511; “Crystal Balls See PEEP STONES. … PEEP STONES … See DEVIL, REVELATION, URIM AND THUMMIM. In imitation of the true order of heaven whereby seers receive revelations from God through a Urim and Thummim, the devil gives his own revelations to some of his followers through peep stones or crystal balls.” – Bruce R. McConkie

Don’t forget, the Church touted that the BoM is the voice crying from the dust of the earth as well…

When you have the chance, don’t forget to share this one with the Mormon you know. First, and foremost however, pray for their salvation!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
