Contradictions between the Bible and Book of Mormon
Contradictions Between Bible and Book of Mormon
2 Timothy 3:7; “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
The scripture above is the theme of this article. Please, pray for the Mormon people won’t you? Below are just some of the contradictions we’ve found between the Bible and the Book of Mormon. For a more detailed list of contradictions in the Triple Combination we offer a book written by Colleen Ralson in our bookstore which I highly recommend!
These contradictions can certainly come in handy when witnessing to your Mormon friends and loved ones. I personally take things like this to ask Mormons what their thoughts are on the discrepancy I’ve shown them. Small things like this may help awaken their cognitive thinking.
How Many Believers Will Be At The Throne?
Revelations 7:9; “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.”
1 Nephi 14:12; “And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon all the face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw.”
When Did The Body Of Christ Originate?
Matthew 16:18 (33 AD); “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Mosiah 18:17 (147 BC); “And they were called the church of God, or the church of Christ, from that time forward. And it came to pass that whosoever was baptized by the power and authority of God was added to his church.”
Are We Saved By Grace Or Works?
Eph. 2:8-9; “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
2 Nephi 25:23; “For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.”
Where Was Jesus Born/Is Jerusalem A City Or An Area?
Matthew 2:1; “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.”
Alma 7:10, 1 Nephi 1:4; “And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.”
“For it came to pass in the commencement of the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, (my father, Lehi, having dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days); and in that same year there came many prophets, prophesying unto the people that they must repent, or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed.”
Most Mormons will try and tell you the Book of Mormon was generalizing when you question them on this issue. They’ve been taught to tell people that Jerusalem is an “area” or that Jerusalem and Bethlehem are suburbs of each other. Here in the Book of Mormon it says Jerusalem is a city.
How Long Did Darkness Last At Jesus’ Death?
Luke 23:44; “And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.”

Are Children Born Into Sin?
Psalm 51:5; “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
Moroni 8:8; “Listen to the words of Christ, your Redeemer, your Lord and your God. Behold, I came into the world not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance; the whole need no physician, but they that are sick; wherefore, little children are whole, for they are not capable of committing sin; wherefore the curse of Adam is taken from them in me, that it hath no power over them; and the law of circumcision is done away in me.”
Are All Races Accepted By God?
Acts 17:26; “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.”
2 Nephi 5:21; “And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.”
How Reliable Is The Bible?
Isaiah 40:8; “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
1 Nephi 13:26-28; “And after they go forth by the hand of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that great and abominable church, which is most abominable above all other churches; for behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away. 27 And all this have they done that they might pervert the right ways of the Lord, that they might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the children of men. 28 Wherefore, thou seest that after the book hath gone forth through the hands of the great and abominable church, that there are many plain and precious things taken away from the book, which is the book of the Lamb of God.” – 600 – 592 BC

Ether 1:34-35; “And the brother of Jared being a large and mighty man, and a man highly favored of the Lord, Jared, his brother, said unto him: Cry unto the Lord, that he will not confound us that we may not understand our words.35 And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord, and the Lord had compassion upon Jared; therefore he did not confound the language of Jared; and Jared and his brother were not confounded.”
When Were Believers First Called Christians?
Acts 11:26; “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” –
Alma 46:13, 15; “And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land—And those who did belong to the church were faithful; yea, all those who were true believers in Christ took upon them, gladly, the name of Christ, or Christians as they were called, because of their belief in Christ who should come.” – BC 73

2 Nephi 31:12-13; “And also, the voice of the Son came unto me, saying: He that is baptized in my name, to him will the Father give the Holy Ghost, like unto me; wherefore, follow me, and do the things which ye have seen me do.13 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism—yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.” – Circa 559 – 545 BC
Voices From Out Of The Dust?
Isaiah 29:3-6; “And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee. 4 And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.5 Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.6 Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire”

How Many Temples Did God Want Built At A Time?
Deuteronomy 12:5, 13-14; “But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come: Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest:14 But in the place which the LORD shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.”

O blessed God, have mercy on this people!” – 90 BC
How Many Times Was The Gospel Delivered?

2 Nephi 29:3, 6, 10; “And because my words shall hiss forth—many of the Gentiles shall say: A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible. Thou fool, that shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. Have ye obtained a Bible save it were by the Jews? Wherefore, because that ye have a Bible ye need not suppose that it contains all my words; neither need ye suppose that I have not caused more to be written.”
Did Melchizedek Have Family?
Heb. 7:1-3; “For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.”
Alma 13:18; “But Melchizedek having exercised mighty faith, and received the office of the high priesthood according to the holy order of God, did preach repentance unto his people. Who Plagiarized Whom?
Acts 3:22-23; “For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.” – Circa 33 AD

Acts 3:22-26; “For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. 25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.” – Circa 33 AD
3 Nephi 20:23-26; “Behold, I am he of whom Moses spake, saying: A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass that every soul who will not hear that prophet shall be cut off from among the people. 24 Verily I say unto you, yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have testified of me. 25 And behold, ye are the children of the prophets; and ye are of the house of Israel; and ye are of the covenant which the Father made with your fathers, saying unto Abraham: And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 The Father having raised me up unto you first, and sent me to bless you in turning away every one of you from his iniquities; and this because ye are the children of the covenant—” –
To show the absurdity of this I will address only three actual issues.
How Many Believers Will Be At The Throne?
Revelations 7:9 vs. 1 Nephi 14:12
John, in a vision, saw the heavens and the workings of angels. Those standing before the throne were from many times and places and were currently in heaven.
On the other hand Nephi is seeing the Earth and telling of the actual events on this planet. He is not addressing what is going on in heaven or what angels are doing, but what men are doing.
As the two passages are addressing two very different topics they cannot be in contradiction.
Simply put, according to Nephi the church of God among mortal men during the last days will be comparitively small compared to the population of the world, and according to John there will be great multitudes assembled in heaven at the last day praising God.
When Did The Body Of Christ Originate?
Matthew 16:18 (33 AD) vs. Mosiah 18:17 (147 BC)
To follow this line of reasoning we must accept that no man who lived before 33 AD was saved, or part of God’s church on Earth. Thus Moses is not part of the Body of Christ, nor is Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Isaiah, or any other Old Testament prophet.
The body of Christ is the faithful saints in any time. It is just that it was not refered to by this title until Christ actually walked the Earth. Why? Because before this time everything was written in Hebrew and not Greek.
Where Was Jesus Born/Is Jerusalem A City Or An Area?
Matthew 2:1 vs Alma 7:10, and 1 Nephi 1:4
“Most Mormons will try and tell you the Book of Mormon was generalizing when you question them on this issue. They’ve been taught to tell people that Jerusalem is an “area” or that Jerusalem and Bethlehem are suburbs of each other. Here in the Book of Mormon it says Jerusalem is a city.”
This is where we get really absurd in the twisting of meaning. The reasoning is that because Nephi (who actually lived in Jerusalem) called it a city, Alma (who had never seen the place before in his life) can’t use the term to refer to an area or region. The simple fact is that Alma states that Jerusalem is the “land” of their forefathers, and does not refer to it as a city. This is logical considering that an obscure town like Bethlehem would have no meaning to a people who had never been to the Middle East.
(If you want me to comment on any other issue mentioned here I am more than willing)
I am only going to go to the trouble of showing one of the incorrect corrections.
The original hebrew the word YOM is the word translated to be many different words dealing with time…..
As you see bibically and BOM it shows “3” unit’s of time. One translated to hours and the other days.
Thus YOM, in it context, is sometimes translated:
Time (Gen 4:3) (Is. 30:8).
Year (I Kings 1:1)( 2 Chronicles 21:19)(Amos 4:4). Age Gen 18:11, Gen 24:1; Joshua 23:1 and 23:2, Gen 47:28). Ago (1 Samuel 9:20).
Always (Deuteronomy 5:29, 6:24, 14:23, and in 2 Chronicles 18:7). Season (Genesis 40:4, Joshua 24:7, 2 Chronicles 15:3).
***Literal 24-hour day (Genesis 1:5,8,13,19,23,31).
It doesn’t even mention hour in this, but it does show it in others.
Does The Church Of Jesus Christ Demand Money For Salvation?
Malachi 3:8-10 says
8 ¶Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
If robbery is not a sin, I guess you can be saved.
Re: Does the Church Of Jesus Christ Demand Money for Salvation?
Clarification: Not a rebuttal against Mormon teachings.
There is a difference between demanding money for salvation and saying not tithing is a sin, for after all, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. You may not tithe, may rob God and go to Heaven, through that choice is truly between you and God. But nonetheless, not tithing is a sin and is punishable by eternal death for an unsaved person just as much as murder and adultery. Still the Church does not say anyone who has murdered or committed adultery cannot be saved.
I’m sure you knew that, but for the sake of other readers, such as myself, who may have interpreted that incorrectly, I wanted to clarify.
In response to Charles on tithing.
The Mormon church does not “require” tithing to be offered, or “demand”. It does suggest people to do so, of their own choice, following the example of the old church under the apostles and of the Hebrews before Christ. Tithing went under a different name then. It was called sacrifice.
The scripture you quote is being taken out of context.
“will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me.” This is God saying that the people have robbed him. This is God demanding that people pay tithes and sacrifices. Not necessarily money, but that people make a sacrifice to Him.
“Ye are cursed with a curse: ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” So, by not paying tithes God removes himself from us, because by not sacrificing we are sinning.
“Bring me all the tithes into the storehouse.” This is what the Mormon church does. All tithes and offerings are collected by the church and used to fund the churches storehouse and assistance programs. These are used to help feed the poor, fund missionary work, help pay medical expenses of the poor, help with other fiscal needs of the poor.
So, if God in the Bible states that we must pay tithe to the church in some manner, is that robbery or sacrifice? Yes, Mormons do pay tithe to the church. We do not rob God.
For Samuel, concerning tithing.
If the Mormon Church was following the example of the Hebrews, the tithe it encouraged would not be money. Money was not titheable for the Hebrews… it was strictly agricultural.
There is absolutely no evidence that the Apostles tithed, nor that they taught the Church to tithe.
Malachi’s rebuke and admonition in 3:10 was not to the children of Israel. Rather, it was to the Priests. They had robbed God. Read malachi 2:1. “And now, O ye Priests, this command is for you”
What command? No command found in chapter 2. The command is in chapter 3. “Return to me, bring ye all the tithe…”
According to Nehemiah 10:37-38, the children of Israel could not take the tithe to the House of God. Tithing to the House of God was the responsibility of the Levites. So Malachi’s command was not to the general population at all.
