Brigham Young’s Idols

01 June

Brigham Young 4Discourses of Brigham Young, selected and arranged by John A. Widtsoe [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1954], 451; “It may be asked whether I have any idols? Yes, I have most darling idols—my God and my religion, and they are all the idols I wish to have. 9:106.” – Brigham Young (Online version is p.689 in link above)

Psalm 115:1-5, 17-18; “Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake. 2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? 3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: 17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. 18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.”

For the sake of space I’ve not listed this entire passage of Psalm 115, however, I strongly encourage you to click on the link above to read vss. 6-16! And the message is especially for those who are LDS.

Brigham Young’s discourse was made of everything our dear Lord told us not to do my friends!

God said not to make idols to worship, causing us to wonder why Utah has made the state into a veritable shrine filled with statues, temples, town squares, and other memorabilia of all things Mormons It’s almost as if you’re standing in the city of a heavily Catholic foreign country filled with the Virgin Mary statues. From St. George to Logan, there’s not a town or city in Utah left untouched by the influence of Mormon worship.

The most important item to note is the singularity of the passage in Psalms. Only the Lord receives glory. God, and He alone, is the object of worship. No other god is mentioned, and certainly no hint of any religion can be seen.

While the Mormon today may not articulate things exactly the way Mr. Young did here, their intent is the same. Even when I was LDS, the order of priorities was way out of place. I considered myself 1. American. 2. Mormon. 3. Wife & mom etc… Nowhere in my priorities was an identification of being Christian…sigh…
