Book of Moses: 2 Verses, 3 Lies

12 August

Moses 6:53-55 “And our father Adam spake unto the Lord, and said: Why is it that men must repent and be baptized in water? And the Lord said unto Adam: Behold I have forgiven thee thy transgression in the Garden of Eden. 54 Hence came the saying abroad among the people, that the Son of God hath atoned for original guilt, wherein the sins of the parents cannot be answered upon the heads of the children, for they are whole from the foundation of the world. 55 And the Lord spake unto Adam, saying: Inasmuch as thy children are conceived in sin, even so when they begin to grow up, sin conceiveth in their hearts, and they taste the bitter, that they may know to prize the good.” [emp. mine]

Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

The book of Moses is comprised of extracts taken from Joe Smith’s version of the Bible. This particular section was supposedly written in November – December 1830. Here are the questions we have today about Smith’s inspired changes to God’s Holy Word –

1.Why would Adam need to be baptized if Jesus hadn’t come on the scene?

2.How and why did Jesus atone for man’s sin 4,000 years before He was born?

3.How could children be ‘whole’, and conceived in sin at the same time?

4.Mormons have historically been taught that all children are born perfect What sin did the kid commit to warrant baptism one day, when he/she was perfect the day before baptism?

5.Who decides which day the kid became imperfect?

If you’re LDS, what are your thoughts?
