Book of Mormon Contradictions about Jerusalem: Land or City?

04 December

BoMBC 83…

Alma 7:9-10; “But behold, the Spirit hath said this much unto me, saying: Cry unto this people, saying—Repent ye, and prepare the way of the Lord, and walk in his paths, which are straight; for behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and the Son of God cometh upon the face of the earth. 10 And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.” [emp. mine]

BC 600…

1 Nephi 1:4; “For it came to pass in the commencement of the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, (my father, Lehi, having dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days); and in that same year there came many prophets, prophesying unto the people that they must repent, or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed.” [emp. mine]

These two verses from the Book of Mormon can be argued with Mormons ad nausea. Trust me, I know.

The problems in these two verses are many as you can see –

1.Nephi said Jerusalem was a city.

2.Alma says Jerusalem was a land.

3.Jesus was born in Bethlehem, not Jerusalem.

4.God’s Holy Spirit wasn’t universally available during the supposed days of Alma (BC 83).

5.Greek wasn’t used as a  universal language in the BC era.

We can always find rock solid truth when we stick with the word of God, and to boot, we’ll even find a fulfilled prophecy or two!

Micah 5:2; “But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah,

Though thou be little among the thousands of Judah,

Yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel;

Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Matthew 2:1; “Now when Jesus was born in Beth-lehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.

Many a Mormon missionary has told me the two cities are suburbs of each other, but this too is wrong. Jerusalem and Bethlehem are five miles apart!

Furthermore, we should take heed to what their own researchers have told us about Joe Smith! Take a look at what Shields has to say about their beloved prophet, and ask yourself…

Can you trust the Book of Mormon with its obvious discrepancies, when Smith wasn’t interested in reading books, and hadn’t read the Bible all the way through?

Shields Research;  “…Joseph had taken advantage of limited opportunities for basic education, but (as his mother insists) he was anything but widely read: at 18 he “had never read the Bible through in his life.  He seemed much less inclined to the perusal of books than any of the rest of our children, but far more given to meditation and deep study.”
