Before Mormons Were Polytheists…

Lectures on Faith [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1985], 5:2, pp. 48-49 “And he being the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, and having overcome, received a fullness of the glory of the Father, possessing the same mind with the Father, which mind is the Holy Spirit, that bears record of the Father and the Son, and these three are one; or, in other words, these three constitute the great, matchless, governing and supreme, power over all things; by whom all things were created and made that were created and made, and these three constitute the Godhead, and are one; the Father and the Son possessing the same mind, the same wisdom, glory, power, and fullness—filling all in all…” — Joseph Smith, 1834 – 35

Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 44:6 “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”

Oh my, what a few years in time can do to a person.

At the beginning of Joe Smith’s tenure of his self proclaimed prophet-hood, he was preaching a totally different message. The god he proclaimed at that time was somewhat similar to the One True God we know in our Bibles.

As we all know, his infamous King Follett Discourse revealed how this previous theory was run off its rails just two months shy of his death in June 1844.

Imagine the confusion this man caused in the minds of those living at the time!

  • As a heads up, the Lectures on Faith are a set of seven teachings given at the School of the Elders, aka School of the Prophets, in Kirtland, Ohio from 1834-1835. They were originally published in the Doctrine and Covenants, but were removed in 1921. The booklet also contains a few items describing whom they believe Melchizedek was, and excerpts from Joe Smith’s ever changing idea of God.

While the Lectures on Faith aren’t technically used in a broad sense, many of the doctrines they presented were adopted into the Church, and are still quoted by LDS leaders today. You can also find references to them in the History of the Church 2:169-70.

When you have the chance, be sure to ask the Mormon you know what they think about Smith’s evolving story on God.

Moreover, why has the Church deleted these lectures from their canon? Are they saying they don’t accept what God has to say?

Pray for those who are entrenched in the myriad of lies this organization keeps piling up on their hearts!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
